      I thought this too, but it isn't so.

      Cat 5e is rated to work at up to 1Gbit at a distance of up to 100m, provided there are not any sharp bends, just as Cat 6 is. Cat 6 will also work at up to 10Gbit.

      Make sure that you don't buy cheap cable which claims to be Cat 5e, but actually doesn't meet the specification. With the cost of copper high at the moment, there is a lot of really cheap cable about like this.
