Wireless access point connection to Sagem 2504N

I have just bought a TP link access point that will act as a repeater, a bridge or a client. After several hours of tinkering I still can't get it working with my Sagem Router. I am trying to use this almost as an external wireless card, so that I can connect a remote PC without laying a cable, I think for this I either want bridge or client mode but I am not sure which, I also think repeater would probably work but I have no need for the extra signal.

I have made some progress, as the TP-Links status now shows that data packets are being sent and recieved, which is wasn't doing originally, but I still cannot get any connection working.

The IP of the sky router is as it comes ...0.1, and the access point is ...1.254 as it comes out of the box. Do i need to set up DMZ and tinker with the IP of the access point or is it just the IP settings that I am using on the remote PC? Like I said the access point appears to be connecting because it claims to be sending and recieving packets of data but the sky router doesn't seem to register it as having an IP, although if it did the IP would be out of the sky routers subnet.

I am now fairly confused, and any help is always appreciated.

Change the IP of the TP Link Access Point so that it is withing the range of the Sky router's IP Addresses. This mean that you will need to change it from 192.168.1.254 to 192.168.0.254, for example.

Sky Fibre Unlimited Pro: Connected at 80,000 kbps / 20,000 kbps

      Speedtest: 17.15MB/s 0.97Mb/s Ping 31 ms

Ahh, that has made the IP (..0.254) pop up on the Sky router, with the MAC address on the access point but I still can't get a connection through it, and now I can't access the TP-Link admin page, as it only seems to accept connection from one IP (which is now in the wrong subset) I will try resetting it and see if it lets me change the access rules.

I wonder if you have enabled DHCP on the Access Point?

Only the Sky router should have DHCP enabled on your LAN.

Fairly sure that I didn't have DHCP enabled, but I can double check now, which mode is most likely to work? Client mode seems to do what I wan't but it has WDS options and I read that the sky firmware doesn't like WDS for some reason, now trying "Bridge with AP" DHCP off with the IP changed to within the Sagems subnet, I still can't find a way to access the TP-link after I change the IP of it.

      Thanks for all the advice.

No dice, as I still can't access the TP-link when I have changed the IP of it, if I do it the other way around and change the IP of the sagem so that its subset will fit with the TP-LINK would that work ?

Essentially the DHCP Server allocates the unique IP addresses for anything on a LAN. It will also direct traffic towards the Internet as required.

There should be a specific way to get around this. The Sky firmware doesn't have a specific 'Wireless Repeating Function' so there will need to be other options.

Which specific model are you using?

I was going to check the manaul before responding to this part of your question. There are a couple of choices.

If you were to reset the AP, and change the IP of the Sagem to 192.168.1.1 then there should be no issue.

The model is TP-Link TL-WA701ND, the previous setup didn't seem to do much, still showing packet transfer, but not showing the IP on the Sagem again.

Update, it seems to work, very very slowly but I wasn't asking for miracles. Thankyou for all the help Scubbie.

Is there anything likely to optimise speed?

Re: Wireless access point connection to Sagem 2504N

Ok, well done. I was reading through the bible for it before I responded.

Access will be slower through the AP than if you had connected directly with the Sky router.

The speed will be affected according to how good the two routers see each other. Remember too that they use different parts of the WiFi n specification. The Sagem 2504N broadcasts at 144Mb/s over a single channel. The TP-Link AP works at 150Mb/s over two paired channels.

This means that is they were side-by-side the max connection speed would be around 72Mb/s.

I did notice that there is only one LAN port. Should you require more, just connect a Network Switch.
