Win 7 is very good at solving problems. What result do you get when you right click the network icon in the tray and select 'Troubleshoot problems'.

i also have windows xp that i use as a backup and the internet connects (through manual ip configuration) but does not work
I missed this earlier, if XP does not work either then it suggests a router problem. Are the ports you are plugged into lit up? Have you tried changing the port you are plugged into. Try resetting the router by pushing a pin in the reset hole on the rear. Hold it there for about 10 secs or until the lights flash.

i just done a troubleshooting again and it seem to found the problem.

"Local Area Connection" Doesn't have a valid IP configuration Not Fixed"

I have tried the settings that were given by a member in this forum and also from sky customer service and it still shows up as unidentified.

also I was thinking it might of been the router but it worked with other laptops using Ethernet so im thinking there must be some sort of settings problems here.

i have tried resetting the lot but same problem

On the chance that it is a Protocol problem you could try resetting it. To do this in Win 7, using Administrator privileges -

      1. Press Win key
      2. Type com
      3. Press Ctrl+Shift+Enter and accept the UA warning
      4. Type netsh int IP reset C:\resetlog.txt at the Command Prompt prompt, press the Enter key. Do not restart computer.
      5. Then type netsh winsock reset at the Command Prompt , and press the Enter key.
      6. Restart the computer.
      7. Again open a Command Prompt, it does not have to be Admin enabled this time and type ipconfig
      8. Hit enter and check that you have received an IP address in the 192.168.0.2-254 range and that the default Gateway is 192.168.0.1

All being correct try to connect.
