using a ddwrt router in conjunction with Sky router

      Hi all,

Have been using a Sky Sagem 2504 router for a number of years, but after reading some great posts on this site about 'hanging' a wireless N point / router off the back of the Sky router I bought a Wireless N / Gigabit TP-Link TL-WR1043ND and subsequently re-flashed it with ddwrt so I can VPN in when away from home.

Wireless N coverage is great and gigabit fantastic for copying files between the 2 PCs so everything is working fine - to a point...

I have the TP-Link connected via ethernet to the sky router with the WAN port using IP address 192.168.0.2 (the sky router is 0.1)

The TP-Link is then configured with LAN address of 192.168.1.1 and is operating as a DHCP server so all wired / wireless devices are getting 192.168.1.x a address. DNS requests are forwarded onto the sky router.

I have left the Sky router 'as is' so I can connect to it using my laptop which is wireless G only. However the laptop cannot connect to anything, buy name or IP address on 192.168.1.x network of the TP-Link but stuff on 192.168.1.x CAN see the 192.168.0.x network (can connect to the web interface of the sky router etc.)

I'm pretty sure I'm missing something simple to get the 192.168.0.1 to talk to 192.168.1.1 but cant figure it out. I read somewhere that in the configuration I'm using I would need to put the 192.168.0.2 address used by the TP-Link into the DMZ on the sky router, but that made no difference....

Any assistance from the resident experts would be greatly appreciated.

Re: using a ddwrt router in conjunction with Sky router

Your in luck i use a few 1043's

      Firstly use build 16785

Secondly plug lan port 1 of the 1043nd into a lan port on the sagem

      Basic Setup

      Wan = Disabled

      Network Setup

      Local Ip = 192.168.0.254
      Subnet Mask = 255.255.255.0
      Gateway = 192.168.0.1
      Local Dns = 192.168.0.1

      Network Address Server Settings
      DHCP Type = DHCP Server
      Start IP Address =192.168.0.2
      Static DNS 1 = 192.168.0.1

      Services
      DNSMAasq

      DNSMasq = Enable
      Local DNS = Enable
      No DNS Rebind =Enable

      Additional DNSMasq Options
      expand-hosts
      dhcp-option=3,192.168.0.1
      dhcp-option=6,192.168.0.254
      strict-order

      Setup
      Advanced Routing
      Operating Mode = Router

      save
      Apply

      on the sagem

      Disable wireless
      Disable dhcp

Re: using a ddwrt router in conjunction with Sky router

      Hi,

I have tried this setup with my 1043ND and untouched netgear router but cannot get it to work, it seems the DNS is not working correctly if I manually set it to

      expand-hosts
      dhcp-option=3,192.168.0.1
      dhcp-option=6,192.168.0.1 (instead of 192.168.0.254)
      strict-order

internet works on the lan but not on the wireless i'm using dd-wrt 18024 could that be the problem should be using that actual version (16785) or can I use >

      Thanks

      Ade.

Re: using a ddwrt router in conjunction with Sky router

18024 is fine and is the best build in a long while
16785 was stated at the time as newer builds had problems

make sure you have turned off dhcp and wireless on the sky router

      you should use dhcp-option=6,192.168.0.254
this offloads the dns from the sky router

Re: using a ddwrt router in conjunction with Sky router

      Thanks Shonk,

I seem to have not explained correctly I had to change dhcp option 6 option to 192.168.0.1 in order to get the internet to work, DNS just wasn't working with it set to 192.168.0.254

Also could you tell me if i'm supposed to DMZ from the sky router to my 1043nd in order to port forward etc?

      Thanks for your help

      Ade.

Sorry for the pig slow reply i didnt notice it

If you have setup your device exactly how mine is you shoud get 0 problems
There is no need for dmz to the 1043nd as this isnt a double nat solution
all routing is handled by the sky router

Re: using a ddwrt router in conjunction with Sky router

      Hi guys.
I'm getting mad :s. I'm trying to put my sagem 2504n working as a modem and my TP-link TL-WR1043ND as the router for entire network. I have followed this guides but the only thing i achieved was turning my internet off :s.
I have spent already 6 hours reading tutorials and trying this to work.
Can someone please help me? Step by Step?

Red face Re: using a ddwrt router in conjunction with Sky router

      Follow this guide http://www.skyuser.co.uk/forum/sky-broadband-fibre-help/49566-step-step-sky-fibre-working-dd-wrt-tp-link-tl-wr1043nd.htm
You also need to state what steps you followed for people to help. If you include a brief description, no one will respond. I hope this helps. Read the part regarding the code as I believe this is where the mistake is (The command).
