Re: How to setup MER on Billion 7800n

Latest: After some remote assistance from someone here, It would appear that my 7700n is garbling the password I give it, and I'm sure i've read somewhere about two = signs at the end.

I know it's garbled it, because when we backed up the configuration file, and edited it, the username was correct, but the password wasn't (it was wildly different, and had 2 = at the end of the password) -- I have tried modifying the config file with the correct password, and also the correct password with the 2 = signs at the end, and loading the edited configuration file.

We're both out of ideas. One anomaly I noticed, is that in the password field in the router when the password has been altered, the field in the router is BLANK... But upon a saving of the config file, the password is intact.

As said previously, I was advised to upgrade to the australian firmware, but not even the bundled CD has the original firmware on it, nor can I locate it online.

Any further suggestions gladly welcomed, as not only myself, but someone else here who is pretty experienced with the 7800 cannot figure out what the issue is.

I'm considering going round a friends house on a non-sky connection, and see if the 7700n plays ball there! If it doesn't, I'm assuming something more sinister is going on?

Usually in configuration files the password will be base64 encoded so it is not stored in plain text. If you copy the garbled password into a base64 decoder (there are quite a few on the internet) it will probably show your actual password.

You mean if it does connect. If it doesn't surely that indicates a faulty router. You have managed to connect with your Netgear, so that seems likely.

Unhappy Re: How to setup MER on Billion 7800n

UPDATE: after continued ******* about, I've tried an online BASE64 encoder & decoder, and the results seemed obviously different... To WHAT degree I don't even know myself!

The password (extracted) from sky router & what is encoded are very different, with excessive characters, not limited to =='s

I'm at such a loss right now, I've been to the pub, and only just got home now, at 5am, because i'm so frustrated, and just need a break from something that a 5 year old router KNOWS what the hell to do with, but my new 7700n, is playing dumb at! :'/!

Copy and paste the LAN MAC and wireless key of the router into a PM and send it to me. I will check the password and return it to you. Please use copy and paste the details, so that there is no chance of a mistake.

For those of you that are stuck with MER and still want to make use of your Billion 7800N, I've knocked together a short guide on how to set it up downstream of your Sagemcom 2504N.

Great to see a firmware for the 7800! Hopefully the 7700 will get one too!
Having to use my faithful DG834PN still, Certainly been good value for money!
