Trouble with ethernet connection
Hi,
Firstly, thanks for taking the time to read this.
I have a problem with my internet connection at home. We have a Netgear DG834GT router at home that is connected to our main PC. I also have another PC in another room that is connected via a mains charged ethernet plug - link below to show what I am using:
[ame=http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B002XLAN10/ref=s9_qpp_gw_p23_ir01?pf_rd_m=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&pf_r d_s=center-6&pf_rd_r=0XGHHYDQDR0WSMP0PHZA&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p =467128453&pf_rd_i=468294]Solwise 85Mbps HomePlug Ethernet Adapter - Single Unit: Amazon.co.uk: Electronics[/ame]
When I switch on the PC in the bedroom with the necessary cables attached, the internet loads and I can browse the internet. However, when it comes to downloading something, for example using Windows Update or iTunes, the internet disconnects. On top of that, I have to reboot the router before it will work again.
I do not have this problem with the main PC that the router is connected to, and if I take my PC through and connect the router to it, then it works fine.
Has anyone got any idea what to do?
Thanks so much
David

Re: Trouble with ethernet connection
What operating system are you using? Have you tried manually assigning an IP address for the problem PC? Try 192.168.0.100 with submask 255.255.255.0 and Gateway 192.168.0.1 .

Re: Trouble with ethernet connection
Update the LAN drivers of your problem PC. Do this from the manufacturers site, do not believe Windows when it says you have the latest drivers. It is very often wrong.

Re: Trouble with ethernet connection
dms05 - not tried that yet. Would I do that by using the IP address of the router in the URL box?
Isitme - I'll try that later, thanks for the advice guys!

Re: Trouble with ethernet connection
No set the LAN Properties on your PC to use a fixed IP. How you get to the LAN Properties depends on your OS. Check the Use this IP address and put in
IP Address.....192.168.0.100
Subnet............255.255.255.0
Gateway..........192.168.0.1
You can leave the DNS Servers blank or use Opendns which are -
208.67.222.222
208.67.220.220

Re: Trouble with ethernet connection
Right click the network icon in your tray and select 'Open Network and Sharing Centre. In the left column, click Change adapter settings. Right click your adapter icon and select Properties, then Highlight Internet Protocol v4. Click the Properties button and you are at the page you want. If you have 2 adapter listed, wireless and LAN, give one the 100 address and the other 101. It does not matter which gets which.

Re: Trouble with ethernet connection
Hey,
Tried that, but it seems to stop the internet connection altogether. Doesn't let me open any page.
Am updating my realtek ethernet driver to see if that helps. Weird thing is that when my bedroom PC's connection goes, so does the main PC...
