My router dropped on the floor!!!....
...(about a two foot drop from desk to floor) and now I have no "Internet light" on my router, even when I connect the telephone cable directly to the Test socket of the master socket.
I am a bit surprised, as the router looks very sturdy, but is it feasible that such a knock could have broken this particular function?

Re: My router dropped on the floor!!!....
If you can, swap the ADSL lead to see if this has been pulled.
Also try another router to see if it can get a signal (not worried about logging in, just proving connection is still Ok).
Then give a friendly call to Sky and ask if they can replace the router for you.
Anything can break if it lands wrongly. With the replacement router, you may wish to look at stopping it from falling off. A small wad of Blue Tac might be worth looking into.

Re: My router dropped on the floor!!!....
Thanks Scubbie, I wondered about the grey cable, but also tried connecting with a very short telephone/modem cable (I think used for dial-up yonks ago) and still no joy....or does it have to be an "ADSL lead" for it to work? If so, I will pick up one from Argos tonight. Sadly I have no other router.
The router is normally out of harms way on the base unit....BUT...the full story is that I was fitting a wireless adaptor to my PC so that I can connect the router directly to my master socket rather than using a 7m extension cable. On getting the adaptor working I realised that I had bleedin well forgotten to write down my WEP key and so hastily reconnected the old config and at this point my haste led to the fall! I phoned Sky for help but they confirmed I was getting no internet at source, and then we noticed the lack of internet light
PS just noticed only maplins sell adsl cables - is it known as an RJ11 cable?Last edited by mcphailan; 03-06-11 at 10:33 AM.

Re: My router dropped on the floor!!!....
It is the RJ11 cable, but I would try a spare one you may have first. Any will work, but I would be inclined to confirm that your existing cable doesn't work before purchasing a replacement cable.
If you don't have one, could you borrow a cable from a friend?
If you do purchase on, ensure that it is short, not 10m long.

Re: My router dropped on the floor!!!....
Thanks again, my IT (work) Support guy has leant me one for the weekend.
It's wrapped up in a small bag, but looks no more than 1.5m...
On the plus side, I'm quite impressed by the wireless thingy; shows very good (80+%) signal strength even though router downstairs and desktop upstairs...

Re: My router dropped on the floor!!!....
1.5m is plenty.
As for the signal strength, it really depends on the combination of the router's WiFi signal, the way in which your property is built and where everything is located to each other.
The Netgear you have is WiFi g and doesn't have the strongest of WiFi signals, but it is good enough for many solutions.

Re: My router dropped on the floor!!!....
Sadly it's not just the cable at fault - still no "internet light" even after trying a new cable.
So hope Sky ring back within their "72 hours" timeframe they gave me; that's either tonight or tomorrow night.
UPDATE - new router on its way from Sky.Last edited by mcphailan; 06-06-11 at 02:43 PM.

Re: My router dropped on the floor!!!....
It's very unlikely that dropping a router would damage your cable to such an extent that it stops working.
The ADSL part of the router probably died. I've got a DG834GT which can't detect an ADSL signal but the LAN part of the router works fine.
