oh, also - I've seen a couple of mentionings of new firmware for this router on the forums. My firmware is currently listed as 5.12.4a4N - which seems considerably older than some of the ones being talked about on here? Is there any way I can force update this or is it just a wait and see deal?

You should be able to get a bit more speed. Call Sky and tell them you have improved your wiring* and would like your speed reconfigured.
*A little white lie sometimes helps get them to look at the line, they often just look at what DLM has set and say that's all you can get, with no effort to improve it.
You just have to wait for the update to download I'm afraid.
