Re: Is my router settings correct - sometimes can get random disconnects in wireless
OK I will phone them but I think thats being a bit too optimistic as online line checks indicate I can get 6mbps on my postcode. I also want to point out I have an old phone socket not the new BT ones, I'm talking about the old style master sockets from BT with the little T in a circle logo in the bottom right corner. I have previously opened the socket and seen all of the wires are intact and connected. I have read a guide online saying for ADSL it is best to remove all wires apart from 2 & 5 to prevent noise. I have not done this as of yet and was wondering what your view on this is, should I do it?
I have also noticed now my line margin has gone done a bit from this morning?

Re: Is my router settings correct - sometimes can get random disconnects in wireless
Yes, remove all the wires except those connected to terminals 2 and 5. The one connected to terminal 3 is the important one, remove it first and take your stats again. The other wires have no effect on broadband, but removing them will do no harm. `
Post code estimates are not reliable, the attenuation and noise margin are the governing factors for speed. Your previous figures showed that 7-9Mb was perfectly reasonable.

Re: Is my router settings correct - sometimes can get random disconnects in wireless
Well phoning Sky was a big waste of time, they ended up decreasing my connection speed instead of increasing it?? They did a re-profile and told me the max my line can support is 3.5mb?? The re-profile got the speed to around 3800kbps on the sync and 510kbps upstream. I told them that this is far fetched how can it be less and demanded to have it changed back to 5022kbps where it was rock stable and the max they managed was 4884kbps? Anyway I don't think its going to get any better but I will still remove the ring wire tomorrow and report back. Here is the current line stats after the phone conversation with Sky:
System Up Time 05:39:31
Port Status TxPkts RxPkts Collisions Tx B/s Rx B/s Up Time
WAN PPPoA 9734 13672 0 3675 18333 00:13:40

p.s I found it strange that the support tech said have a good evening when its midnight?

Some of Sky help can only be described as incompetent at best.
Let's see if you can get the noise margin up a bit by removing the ring wire.

Re: Is my router settings correct - sometimes can get random disconnects in wireless
After removing the ring wire and fitting an adsl nation xf-1e filter this is my stats:
System Up Time 00:05:28
Port Status TxPkts RxPkts Collisions Tx B/s Rx B/s Up Time
WAN PPPoA 2140 2929 0 1662 9894 00:04:36
LAN 10M/100M 1256 0 0 983 0 00:05:23
WLAN 54M 4705 3943 0 10273 2794 00:05:16
ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 5117 kbps 764 kbps
Line Attenuation 42.0 db 24.4 db
Noise Margin 8.1 db 13.0 db
Do you think the support rep capped it at 5117 kbps? Don't you think I should be able to get more speed what can I do?

Re: Is my router settings correct - sometimes can get random disconnects in wireless
Connecting the router using the original Sky filter and then the phone via the xf-1e into a 4 way splitter jumps up the noise margin quite a bit, is this good what does it mean?

Re: Is my router settings correct - sometimes can get random disconnects in wireless
That is a bit better, you have increased the speed and the noise margin. It will not be capped a 5117, could be 5120/768. Leave it for a while, let it settle then take the stats again. You really need the noise margin to rise a bit more.
Just seen your latest post. I am not sure what is happening, it could be your phone is casing a problem, but I would leave it like that and call Sky. Tell them you have made improvements and would like your speed raised.

Re: Is my router settings correct - sometimes can get random disconnects in wireless
OK I phoned them again and think I got some one who's accent sounded British so was easy to tell them exactly what I have done and they looked at their end and said it is possible to get around 6.5 Mbps. Unfortunately they did not have a manager present and said within the next 24 hours the line will be re-profiled to attain the best possible speed. I will post back tomorrow hopefully with the results.

Re: Is my router settings correct - sometimes can get random disconnects in wireless
Well I had to call in again knowing Sky they can get very forgetful, the service rep started taking me through troubleshooting before I managed to fully explain the situation. I had to ask him quite a few times that I am sure I can sync at a faster rate and he decided to check and said you can get 7.3mb on your line. Well he finally did the job by I think reducing the NM a bit and getting it synced:
System Up Time 00:17:28
Port Status TxPkts RxPkts Collisions Tx B/s Rx B/s Up Time
WAN PPPoA 24711 45933 0 3945 138857 00:07:42
LAN 10M/100M 2562 0 0 516 0 00:17:24
WLAN 54M 56650 33942 0 67582 3466 00:17:19
ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 7068 kbps 764 kbps
Line Attenuation 42.0 db 24.5 db
Noise Margin 8.9 db 13.0 db
Thanks for all the help.

Re: Is my router settings correct - sometimes can get random disconnects in wireless
Increasing the speed reduces the noise margin. I think a good agent could have got you another 500kb, but you are better off than you were before.
