Exclamation Sky router goes down constantly

      Hello there

I have been using sky broadband for a year now but for the last 2 months, the router is playing up. For example, about twice everyday, the internet goes down but when I restart the computer, its fine.

How can I sort this as I hate having to reboot my pc all the time.

      Router - BskyB Netgear DG934G

      Regards
      -Joe

If rebooting the PC cures the connection, how can you be sure that the issue is with the router?

First thing to help would be to know a little about your PC and to see your router stats (including the up times).

With regards to your PC, the information I am initially thinking of is:

      * which OS?

      * how are you connecting to the router? (i.e. Ethernet cable, WiFi card, WiFi dongle)

      * do you have any other computers? If so, do they have problems?

Thank you for those. Could I ask you to post your router stats though as well? I did ask this before, but it would confirm where any issue is. It is very important to include the up times, as well as the connection speeds in this instance.

Thank you, but not quite what I was looking for.

On that same page is a link to 'Router Statistics'. If you could click that and post those figures please.

You may also wish to edit your last post and remove the MAC addresses & your WAN IP address.

The picture below will give you perhaps a better idea of what I am specifically looking for.

Re: Sky router goes down constantly

      That's great.

From that screen shot we can tell that the router was completely reset at around 7.45pm last night.

Did you power off the router at this time?

If not, could you please double check all the power connections please?

Daft things can happen. Make sure that the PSU is plugged in securely to the mains socket and that it isn't in a position where someone could accidentally knock it.

Also ensure that the plug is firmly inserted in the back of the router.

If you have a recurrence of the problem, could you please take another screen shot like the one above please? Don't be tempted to reboot the router for now. We need to see what is happening.

As a side-note, your connection could be improved too.

The noise margin for your download signal is showing 11dB, whilst the upload is showing 5dB.

      * Could you please confirm how you are connecting your router to the telephone line?

      * Do you have any telephone extensions and how are they connected to the master socket?

Yes, I did reset my router as I forgot my login for the sky broadband page

I have plugged the ADSL filter into the phone plug and connected the ADSL lead for the internet connection (router) and phone lead.

      What happens now then?

I am looking at your stats and I am thinking that perhaps whatever is slowing your connection, is also responsible for the periodic disconnections.

      Two things:

      * monitor your connection. Should you have an additional drop, then don't reset your router, but take a snapshot of the stats as soon as you can. Post the picture in this thread

      * I believe that your connection could be capable of considerably more than what it is producing at present. Your download attenuation is a little lower than mine (compare with my stats) and you should be able to similar or better speeds

So with the above in mind, could you go through the following:

      * What stats do you get if you plug just the micro-filter and the router into the Test Socket?

      * when using the test socket, are all your telephone extensions dead?

      * What do you have in the way of telephone extensions and are these wired behind the faceplate that you removed in order to see the test socket or are they plugged into the from of the socket?

      * do you have a spare micro-filter which you can plug into the test socket and recheck the stats?
