Soz..been off for a couple of days...ok. I swapped ethernet cables and still have the same prob....Exdee...thanx for your post..that made things really clear for me...I think the thing I was concerned about was the (55) part of the ip addy...I had no idea on what I was supposed to put there..unfortunatly this still made no difference.
      *** I have also de-selected IPv6 as suggeted in dms05's links ****
      what it shows is

      Windows IP Configuration

      Host Name . . . . . . . . . . . . : Aspire
      Primary Dns Suffix . . . . . . . :
      Node Type . . . . . . . . . . . . : Hybrid
      IP Routing Enabled. . . . . . . . : No
      WINS Proxy Enabled. . . . . . . . : No

Tunnel adapter Local Area Connection* 7:

      Media State . . . . . . . . . . . : Media disconnected
      Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
      Description . . . . . . . . . . . : Teredo Tunneling Pseudo-Interface
      Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 02-00-54-55-4E-01
      DHCP Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : No
      Autoconfiguration Enabled . . . . : Yes

The only other thing I can think of it that maybe there is a physical problem with my PC's ethernet port....apart from that...I have no idea

Thanx all for your help...your all great

Your ethernet adapter is not being shown there. Can you go to the Device Manager and see if the Ethernet adapter is shown under Network Adapters? To do this press the Windows key and type dev, click the Device Manger icon when it appears.

If it is not properly installed it will be shown with a mark against it, maybe under Other Devices. If it is there, try reinstalling using the latest manufacturer's driver. Try to install the driver only and not the software that comes with it.

If it is not shown at all in the Device Manager, it is not installed and may be disabled in the BIOS. How to get into the BIOS varies by model, with Acer it can be [F2] or [Del] or [F1] or [Ctrl]+[Alt]+[Esc] Immediately After Power Up. You will usually get an indication on the first Post screen. When you are in the BIOS look for something like attached devices, which will include the sound and possibly a dial up modem. When you find it change it from Disabled to Enabled.

If it is shown as enabled in the BIOS, then I am afraid it has a fault, all you can do is install a plug in card.
