      Re: New D-Link DSL-2640S Firmware Sky_2.04?

Just a side-note, I loved my Netgear DGN2000. Unfortunately they have a bad habit of getting too hot.

My 2nd replacement from last summer no longer works reliably on WiFi so I've had to fall-back on the Sky Router. I'm not trying to save up for a replacement router to get WiFi n again, but I'm split on which router to get out of these:

Draytek Vigor 2820n Dual WAN Wireless-N ADSL2+ VPN Firewall Modem Router

Draytek Vigor 2820VN Dual WAN Wireless-N ADSL2+ VoIP VPN Firewall Modem Router

Draytek Vigor 2820VSN Dual WAN Wireless-N ADSL2+ VoIP ISDN VPN Firewall Modem Router

      Billion BiPAC 7404VNOX 3G / VoIP / 802.11n ADSL2+ Wireless VPN Firewall Router

Netgear DGND3300 RangeMax Dual Band Wireless-N ADSL2+ Modem Router

Netgear DGN3500 RangeMax Wireless N Gigabit ADSL2+ Modem Router

The Draytek routers look nice and support ADSL2+, Cable/FTTC & 3G. The netgear are cheaper and offer different benefits.

      Re: New D-Link DSL-2640S Firmware Sky_2.04?

We have a 2820 at work and the latest firmwares (3.3.4, 3.3.5 and 3.3.5.1) leave a lot to be desired. QoS is broken, it reboots every time ADSL is lost and even the front status lights don't light up correctly. Shame because it's a very powerful and capable router. As far as that router goes though it's extreme overkill for a home user unless you want its VPN and dual WAN facilities. Consider the 2710 if you want a Draytek.

Our IT supplier, ironically the same who supplied the 2820, installed an undiclosed Billion model at another customer's premises and he reports that it is working very well.

      Hope that helps.

      Re: New D-Link DSL-2640S Firmware Sky_2.04?

Many thanks for that. I've yet to research the routers, but not in too much of a hurry as I need the money first.

Sorry if it appears I was hijacking the thread. I was actually trying to show that the DGN2000 has major problems. There are actually several forums that have reports by members fixing their own heat-sinks in an attempt to keep them running.

Well to get us back on topic i'm here to report that my D-Link 2640S has finally been updated to 2.04. My "Network Type" is now MER, other than that no obvious changes.

Does anyone know of a way to force the update (perhaps using Mel's Authenticity)? Mine has been stuck on 1.11 for almost a month now.

Mine too, Although I am not too bothered, It seems to be working perfectly fine But it would be good to know if it was possible to update somehow.

      Re: New D-Link DSL-2640S Firmware Sky_2.04?

If I recall correctly from looking at the update log from an original Sky router, it would try to download new firmware each month, but when the router actually gets the firmware is controlled by Sky's server, possibly based on its MAC address. So, assuming the D-link's the same, you might be able to download it yourself directly from the Sky firmware server, but probably only if your router is due to be upgraded this month, or has already been upgraded.

      Re: New D-Link DSL-2640S Firmware Sky_2.04?

The new MER mode has one disadvantage, I was previously able to renew my IP address by clicking "Disconnect" then "Connect" in the "Connection Status" screen.

However this is now longer working and I just get my previous IP address back.
