Sky Q will add Dolby Atmos and voice control in 2017

Sky Q will add Dolby Atmos and voice control in 2017 - Pocket-lint

      • Dolby Atmos sound on select Ultra HD content
      • Voice Control functions using mic on Touch Remote

Following the announcement that Sky will introduce satellite dish-free Sky Q from 2018, the company has also released an infographic detailing its plans for 2017 and it mentions Dolby Atmos and voice control.

There's no specific date set for either feature, but it's good to see their on Sky's radar. BT has recently said it will broadcast live Ultra HD sporting content with Dolby Atmos sound, so it's no real surprise to see Sky wanting to follow suit. It would have been nice to see HDR (High Dynamic Range) in the plans too, but considering the Sky Q box can't support it, it's no wonder. However, it remains to be seen if it will be able to support Hybrid Log Gamma when it eventually rolls out. On the contrary, Virgin's upcoming V6 Box will be able to support HDR content.

The roadmap for the year ahead mentions both Voice Search and Voice Control. Voice Search should arrive soon, and is a feature we've known about for some time, but Voice Control is new. Sky hasn't said what the proposed function will do, but we can assume you'll be able to perform functions such as turning the box on and off, as well as perhaps your TV, using your voice. There's already a microphone in the Touch Remote, but at the moment it's unused.

Another feature Sky has mentioned is Autoplay on Credit, which we assume relates to Sky Box Sets. It's likely the next episode in a series you're watching will start playing a lot sooner than they currently do. Other features we already know about that will launch in the coming months include the entire Formula 1 season in 4K Ultra HD and the ability to record six shows at once while watching a seventh on the Silver 2TB box.

I already have some downloaded Dolby Atmos movies which are a mixed bag tbh. Good sound & good movie (ie Pacific Rim or Gravity) ; Good sound , but terrible movie (i.e. Jupiter Ascending) ; Good movie but mediocre sound (i.e. Iron Man 3).

As for recording 6 shows whilst watching a seventh...... *yawn* ... its getting ridiculous ... reminds me of the Gillette ad ...

I think that Sky are only adding that as not only can the Q Silver do it, but because VM put it in their STB.

That Sky Q pipeline looks very distant

Not really. I understood that the launch in Germany would be this year.

The same site has a rather long review of Sky Q too.

      Sky Q review: 4K, multi-room support, apps and more - Pocket-lint

It's worth a read for anyone who's interested in Sky Q, but - do believe that there is an inaccurate/misleading point. It states that Sky Q doesn't support 4K UHD HDR. Sure it points out that there isn't any HDR content at this time, but I was under the strong impression that it does.

When you connect the Q Silver/2TB Q Box to a 4K UHD TV and set it up for 4K it checks with its an 8bit or 10bit connection. HDR requires 10bit.

The review does suggest that 4K multi-room might become available. This is one of the things we've always suspected here. Since all the STBs are effectively rented, any upgrades should be relatively simple. Ok Sky may charge for swapping the boxes, but a 4K Q Mini is confirmed as a possibility now.

Personally I think a lot of people would love a 4TB or larger box to become available too. Since the internal drive is a 3.5", 8TB drives are also a real possibility.

A lot depends on the default sector size that XTVFS uses. If it's 512 bytes like Sky+HD then the boxes will only support a maximum 2TB regardless of the size of drive fitted.

Fair point, who said that Sky can't use a different filesystem for a 4TB Q Box than the 1TB or 2TB? It's their system, so realistically they could do anything they want.
