      Control Mini with Bluetooth remote?

      Hi Guys!

so, I have an old Sky HD box in my lounge and run a magic eye to my bedroom out of the RF2. It's cheap and does the job, but I'm thinking of upgrading to sky q.

now, I have no space at all for the mini box in my bedroom the to is mounted on the wall adnd there are no cables visible etc, and I want to keep it that way. it'll likely sit in my loft or if I can squeeze it behind the tv and the mount, I might fit it in there.
so, I want to be able to control the mini q box in the bedroom without having to use infra red. Is it possible for me to buy a second Bluetooth remote and use that for the bedroom (while downstairs has its own Bluetooth remote).

Or or can I hook up a magic eye to the sky q box and control it that way?

basically, I want to be able to control the sky q mini box without having to point the remote at it.

sky's telephone sales people say it can't be done, but I'm seeing conflicting info on the interwebs and want some definitive advice. Has anyone done this? It seems a massive oversight on Sky's part, if their Bluetooth equipped mini Q box can't be controlled by a Bluetooth controller!

Re: Control Mini with Bluetooth remote?

The q mini and its remote is ir only, only the sky q 2tb box can use the bluetooth enabled remote.
It would work for you though with a Wireless TM-IR Remote Control Extender.

Having a mini in a loft may impact your wifi, unless you have it ethernet connected or know it will get a clean wireless signal.
I would not recommend having the min very close or behind your tv if you are using wifi, that will impact the signal.

Hi LEttice. I might not have described correctly.

can I control the mini with a new, second, Bluetooth remote?

Or is the mini box IR only?

Its IR only, I suppose so the signals don't get mixed up with main box which can be controlled from almost anywhere in your house.

Sorry, it looks like I was wrong. I am sure I read soon after their release, that the minis were not equipped with BT.

I had never heard of that before.
I did not think the mini had any Bluetooth capability.
I have just unpaired my touch remote and tried it with a spare mini, I cannot get it work.

Edit: It does work, just repaired it.

Re: Control Mini with Bluetooth remote?

Cheers guys. Appreciate your help. Have now placed an order for 2tb sky q and a mini box. Just need to get hold of a Bluetooth remote. What do you reckon my chances of blabbing one from the sky install man are?! Or does anyone have one they want to get rid of? I know some people aren't big fans!

Re: Control Mini with Bluetooth remote?

If you buy one from Sky its 40
      https://accessories.sky.com/catalogu...q&category=all

But there seem to be some on eBay for 18 - 20
Assume they are selling them as they do not like the sky q touch remote, but it's really not their kit to sell.

Not sure any engineer would let you have an extra touch remote or even wanting to install a touch remote with a mini.
      But no harm in asking.

By the way the Bluetooth on the remote has a good range and easily works with my mini or sky 2tb box through walls and floors. Being paired to a specific box, they will not interfere with each other

I did find with my testing last night on a spare resetted mini, that you have to start with a standard remote first, then add the touch remote.

Re: Control Mini with Bluetooth remote?

I don't suppose you've any idea whether the USB socket on the mini q box is powered sufficiently to run a chromecast or Amazon firestick? The tech spec on sky's website indicate it is a '1a port not powered' but I don't really know what that means.

my tv is ancient and doesn't have a USB port so am considering installing an extra power socket to power said dongles.

      cheers,

      jon
