Sky Q app - External display output is blocked

My son has a Hudl2 (Android 5.1) tablet which has the Sky Q app installed.

Normally this works OK, with the exception that certain channels are unavailable for live viewing via the TV Guide.

It has a micro HDMI output which allows you to view the display on a connected TV.

Unlike other apps, the Sky Q app refuses to show TV streams on this display failing with the message "External display output is blocked".
This seems like an intentional bug.

It seems like some moron at Sky has decided that while it is OK to watch TV on the tablet screen, it is not OK to watch on a slightly bigger connected screen 3m away.
What is the point of such a limitation?

Has anyone else encountered this problem and do you know of a workaround?

      There is no workaround.
Sky Go as well as Sky Q apps on all tablets/phones restricts this method.
You will also find the projection method like on the Lenovo tablets has the same restriction.
On the older methods for Sky Go on a PC using Silverlight, it was not possible to apply a restriction via software and so HDMI out there may work.
It is not Sky that really restrict this, it is the rights and license agreements that sky have to adhere to from certain content holders, broadcasters, sports owners, movie houses etc.
Sky apps are not alone in this, many others around the world do the same.
This question has been asked many times on here in the Sky Go section, but Sky Q and other Sky Sports apps will adhere to the same rules.

Re: Sky Q app - External display output is blocked

I can understand copyright restrictions applying to recording shows, but if you are watching live TV I cannot see why it is OK to watch on the tablet screen but not OK to watch it on a slightly bigger screen hard-wired to your tablet in the same room.
This makes absolutely no sense from a copyright point of view.

Why is this any different than watching on the TV screen streaming via a Sky Q Mini box, except that Sky are not making extra profit by renting you another Sky Q Mini box?

If they enabled it, then you could give your Sky Account creds to a mate so that they could watch Sky on their big tv via their tablet.

Or show in a pub, club, event or even stream illegally.
Hence also, why for many differing broadcasts on sky boxes (and other platforms) you will also see a combination of numbers on screen top right that is a numbered reference to your sky account.

That would apply if you were watching a program or film that you had downloaded to your tablet. However to watch live shows via the TV Guide you have to be able to connect to your Sky Q box via WiFi just like the Sky Q Mini.
It should be quite easy to detect in software whether you are watching live TV streamed from your Sky Q box or playing back something you had recorded to your tablet.

It's still avoiding subscription charges / costs. If you want to watch Sky TV in another room on a big tv then Sky expects you to pay for another rmain (Q mini) box.

Not defending Sky, just explaining the business model. They will have agreed rights with the content providers based on a certain model and they have to deploy content protection to protect the contract with the content providers.

Re: Sky Q app - External display output is blocked

Their is a work around because I had the same problem and its simple.

Go HERE and scroll to the bottom of the page you will see Sky Q Version: 1.0.2.

On your tablet delete the current Sky Q version then go to the above link, click the Version: 1.0.2 and install it.

Your also better off disabling auto update as well and that will stop the Sky Q app from auto updating and this older Sky Q version works via 3rd party devices like to a TV, projector etc.

      Regards
