Online Video gets bigger and better on Sky Q

      https://corporate.sky.com/media-cent...etter_on_sky_q

Sky is expanding the hugely popular Online Video section of its next generation home entertainment system, Sky Q.

Great new content from Tastemade, Comedy Central, VICE, Copa90, GINX eSports TV and Machinima will join a line-up which already includes the likes of Funny or Die, Red Bull, GoPro and Jamie Oliver’s Food Tube, as well as James Corden’s online sensation Carpool Karaoke.

Sky Q is a great new way to experience TV, with brilliant new features like the ability to record multiple shows at once, pause in one room and carry on in another and take your recordings with you. And it’s set to get even better with even more features and the UK’s most comprehensive Ultra HD service.

The short-form Online Video section is curated by Sky, and integrated into the intuitive Sky Q interface. Grouped by theme, it makes it quick and effortless for customers to find the best entertainment from the web. Categories currently available include:

Food and Drink – Delicious new content from Tastemade joins an already stellar line up, including Jamie Oliver’s Food Tube and Kin Community, in providing the tastiest food and drink

Quick Laughs – Comedy Central will join the likes of Funny or Die and Honest Trailers in providing some of the sharpest comedy on the web

Entertainment – GINX eSports TV and Machinima will bring eSports and gaming onto the service for the first time, sitting alongside more general entertainment content from the likes of Screen Junkies, Vanity Fair and more

Sports – Ready for the new football season Copa90 adds its unique take on football culture to Online Video, to sit alongside Whistle Sports,VICE, RedBull and GoPro.

Style – Brush up in the style stakes with videos from Conde Nast, including Vogue, Vanity Fair and GQ

Other playlisted genres include Feel Good, Fitness, and the adrenaline fuelled Awesome.

Julia Barry, Sky’s Director of On Demand and Online Video, commented: “We know that more and more people, of all ages, are watching more online video. Since we introduced our Online Video service on Sky Q, it has been incredibly popular, and it’s set to get even better. Now, whether customers are after quick laughs from Comedy Central, their football fix from Copa90, or the latest in gaming from Machinima, they can access it all from the world’s best home entertainment system, Sky Q.”

In addition to the great new content coming soon, Sky Q customers can also now enjoy all the best clips from the The Late Late Show with James Corden, including the smash hit Carpool Karaoke, featuring superstars like Adele, Justin Bieber and Michelle Obama and watched by hundreds of millions of people around the world.

Online video from VICE has also recently joined the service, meaning Sky Q customers can watch content from VICE’s globally popular digital channels including VICE.COM, VICE News, Motherboard and Munchies.

All that is, is mostly reject channels on youtube.
Why not use the youtube app on sky q and search for what you like there, youtube app recommendations is excellent.
Annoys be a bit to think that sky are paying someone out of my sub to watch youtube stuff and then put them in a recommendations list on sky q.
Thought id try copa90 as a football fan and when in the first video they said 'football kits are the best thing about football' I switched off.
The only one of any merit is GINX eSports TV, as that does work well for people, as they provide their own apps on many platforms and linear channels across the world and do get good reviews.

Yep Plex is a wonderful bit of kit and adding that would open a world of fun for Sky and customer.

When I saw the launch I was really surprised that you could stream your own music to the Q TV boxes.

It's always been pointed out that Sky are concerned about copyright issues and allowing people to potentially play 'naughty' material through their boxes might not be something they would wish to promote.

Perhaps the big production companies in the USA don't want Sky to support Plex, but they were happy for Sky to support the music streaming?

You can sideload apps on nowtv including Plex (mainly because its based on a roku), sky not as restrictive as once used to be. They could easily restrict that.
Maybe Elan Feingold has approached sky to get his product on skyq, hes certainly famous for his approaches.
This recent article gives other platforms some hope of moving it away from its current dedcated media server approach.
      https://techcrunch.com/2016/06/09/pl...-media-server/
Not sure sky would want to have plex on sky q and also have to provide semi-support for a home built media server, that I think would be their sticking point for sky q and and the sky q hub as it stands today. Its a bit more than just mirroring photos or using an inbuilt app.

But yes sky do have heavy peer pressure from their commissioning contracts and production companies, that would have to agree it, even for a basic plex app.

Unfortunately the version of plex you can sideload to a nowtv box is a very old version and only because it was open source. The current version is not open source and not available on NowTV (officially or sideloaded).

The old app is very very old and not nice at all.
