Someone on here has already metioned that BT are going to use profile 17a.
Very high speed digital subscriber line 2 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia which uses frequencies up to 17.664 MHz.
I presume they previously used one of the 8s.
Getting frequencies up to 17,664,000 Hz to work on cables originally designed to work from 300-3000 Hz is pretty damn clever.

Re: Sky will be looking to run trials of fibre-optic broadband
Im on the Uckfield exchange and have had fibre available from BT for the last 10 months odd.
TBH though I wouldnt touch BT again with a barge pole. I really only use the sky BB for gaming and sky player.
Obviously a greater speed would be nice but im routing for a better ping and a better connection on fibre.
I would defo take sky BB at £20 a month!

The question is, assuming the trial goes well and they decide to go forward with offering fibre to their customers, how long after the trial launches, as a ballpark figure, would the service go live?
Would we be talking before the Summer, sometime this year, sometime next year ... ?

Re: Sky will be looking to run trials of fibre-optic broadband
I'm happy with Sky, and happy to wait - but there will come a point when it becomes a no-brainer. Hopefully Sky will have come through with an excellent package long before that happens
I'm wondering .. following on from what someone said the other day about restricted speeds ... I'm currently on a capped speed of 4Mb because any higher my connection becomes unstable. How will this be affected if I was on FTTC? I've been told the connection from the exchange to the cabinet is fine .. it is the copper between the cabinet to the house that is causing the problems.

Re: Sky will be looking to run trials of fibre-optic broadband
tbh I know nothing about it, as I have had other commitments to deal with.
Now assuming that fibre has to be better than the old wiring, I would assume, that the connection has to be far better than the older way of doing things.
The connection to the cabinet has to be far better than before, and so I would expect to see a higher speed, as there is less copper for it to degrade as such. I know you said it is from the box to your house that is the issue, but logically, the old way may have only being able to get say 5 meg at the box, in turn you then lose 1 meg to your house.
If that makes sense lol - I could be completely wrong though.~ Never, ever, argue with an idiot. They'll drag you down to their level and beat you with experience ~
