New hard drive for Sky+ HD Samsung 2009 box - formatting required?

I've bought a 1TB drive for my old Sky+ HD box (Samsung 2009)

Managed to install the new one to replace my noisy 500Gb drive

Problem - box does not recognise new hard drive when powered up (diskless)

Tried Sys Reset but no change
      Sky+ planner rebuild -no change

Do I need to format the new drive?

If so, any idea on how I can do it with my iMac?

(dreading the answer as my googling suggests I need a PC)

Sorry, yes you will need either a PC or Laptop and the ExPVR software.

There is a way to get the Samsung to format the drive, but it will only format it to 500GB. Only ExPVR will allow you to format the drive to 1TB.

Could you explain how I format it to 500gb? (Until I find a friend with a PC or Windows laptop)

      No problem...

If you can access the menu, using your Sky remote control, press the following:

      <Services> 0 0 1 <Select> 8 <Select>

Follow the on screen instructions from here.

This will format the drive to no more than 500GB.

There is also a method using the buttons on the Sky+ STB too:

      1. Switch off the power at mains or pull the mains cable out of the back of the STB
      2. Hold both the LEFT & RIGHT buttons
      3. Whilst continuing to hold the buttons, switch on the power or plug the power cord back in & wait for blue ring to illuminate
      4. Release the LEFT & RIGHT buttons, press SELECT
      5. The blue ring cycles backwards while disk is quick formatted
      6. If format sucessful PLAY lights up, if not RECORD lights up
      7. Box goes into standby – wait 30 seconds to wake it up by pressing the <Sky> button on the Sky remote control

Let us know how you get on please.

Unfortunately the Sys Reset option didn't work
Still can't do the planner rebuild either (diskless issue again?

Is there any other way to force a re-format?

Re: New hard drive for Sky+ HD Samsung 2009 box - formatting required?

It sounds likely that the drive hasn't been correctly installed or something else hasn't correctly been put back.

It might be useful to take it apart again and carefully put it back together, leaving just the cover so that you can see everything is working before putting it back.

Re: New hard drive for Sky+ HD Samsung 2009 box - formatting required?

Did you format the drive before putting it in? If so that may be the problem, the box will not recognise Windows formatting. If this is the case, take it out and remove any formatting or partitions you created, then try it.

As suggested you would be betting using EX-PVR to format the disk to its full capacity before placing it in the box. The free version is sufficient for this, you only need the paid version if you want to transfer programs from the old disk.
