Inside the 2TB Sky+ HD Box

What a pain in the backside that was.

I have to say that has to be the most complicated (and hardest) STB to get inside of, you have to remove so many screws etc, but we managed it.

For those of you that would like to know what is inside the 2TB Sky+HD Box check out the pictures below.

I suppose the most asked question so far is, what HDD is in it?

Rather than make you read all the way down to the bottom, we will tell you here.

Hitachi HCS5C2020ALA632 could also be known as H3C20003254S

      Type DS5SAAD200

      Rated 5V 430mA, 12V 350mA

      SATA 6.0 Gb/s

Please do not attempt to do this, if you are not confident in doing so, it was a complete pain in the backside, and took about 30 minutes from start to finish.

      Taking the Sky+HD Box apart
      (WORK IN PROGRESS)

Important; Doing this will void your warranty as there is a warranty sticker on the underside of the STB

You need to remove the 4 phillips screws on the underneath of the box and also the one in the centre of the back which is also the same screw as the ones you have just removed from underneath.

Once you have removed those 5 screws, the lid should carefully slide off, once you have lifted the black plastic flap over the metal tab.

Once the lid is off it looks like this.

You will notice some metal tabs that have been twisted so as to hold the removable lid on. ( Marked A B C D on the above picture) These need careful twisting to allow you to do this.

You also need to do the same on the front bit, (Marked E F G H) and there are a couple of black plastic clips as well, and some screws for one of those, as well as the 2 screws for the HDD need removing once you have the buttons etc removed. There is also a ribbon cable from the top to the front which needs carefully disconnecting from the front bit.

Its hard to explain this, but once you have the lid off, it is apparent on this bit what needs doing.

      Once the lid is off, the inside of the STB looks like this;

You now need to remove the fan (2 screws) and also the screw holding the upper circuit board in, as well as removing the screw thingies from the serial connector on the back, the small screw near where the removed lid screw was, (think it is near the pink bit iirc) as well as the nuts and both washers off each of the LNB connectors.

Once you have done this, you need to very carefully lift the circuit board up off the multi pin connector (passing through to the bottom circuit board) and then pull it towards the front of the box so as to lift it out.

Once this board is out, it looks like this.

You now need to remove the screw in the HDD caddy and also bend the 2 lugs again (marked I + J) that hold it on. This allows you to take out the HDD to either see what model or replace etc

The HDD inside the 2TB box is an Hitachi HCS5C2020ALA632

To put the box back together, just reverse what you have done in the above instructions.

I suppose there isn't as much necessity to break open this box with such a large hdd in it.

With previous models having a 500GB or, even worse, a 300GB disc inside - upgrading was the primary reason for taking the chance on your warranty

300GB up to 2TB ........ bring it on!!

Those pesky bendable tabs are a real pain.

      Nice photos.

Nope. But people wanted to know what HDD was in this one, so as they could use in their upgrades for the older boxes, so the mission was accomplished.

I only paid 49 for the box anyway, so the warranty wasn't really the issue. I could always remove the sticker anyway, and deny any knowledge of there being one in the first place anyway, I guess.

Those pesky bendable tabs are a real pain.
      Yup

      There were 10 in total.

      Nice photos.
I wish I had taken more now, as I could have shown every stage, but like you say, chances of anyone opening one of these boxes is very slim anyway.

Interesting that they are using a molex convertor rather than a dedicated SATA power port. I suppose it is cheaper.

Wonder if this box would accept a 3TB HDD?

Re: Inside the 2TB Sky+ HD Box

They do look the same, as we have the 1TB and the 2TB

If anything, slightly different plastic casing on the top. However, I never dismantled the 1TB box as there was no real need to do so.

Thank you Ged for this. I struggle with the cover and didn't want to break it.

No a 3TB drive will not work.

The sector size is completely wrong and requires a suitable firmware to support it.

My personal guess is that we won't see drives larger than 2TB on a Sky STB before UHDTV is ready for broadcasting. I would hope that when this happens we will also have considerably larger drives available too as I do not think that 4TB would be suitable. On top of all this, I guess that FAT32 will have to be replaced by a suitable file system which can store very large files. some of the Sky Sports On Demand content is greater than 8GB now. I shudder at the thought of UHDTV file sizes.

At the moment though we haven't even got any media device to store UHDTV on which is similar to Blu-Rays, for example. So there is a lot more work to do before
