Audio dropouts with 5.1 sound system

I have a Sky+ HD box connected to a Dolby D surround sound amplifier. I have noticed very occasional sub-one second audio dropouts in the past but in the last week or so the problem has got much, much worse; sometimes making it difficult to watch a program. Has anyone else noticed this? Has the box firmware changed recently? This isn't a 'lip-sync' issue, but one that I believe is connected with the dolby decoder. I suspect some sort of clock synchronisation problem between the STB and the amplifier. The problem doesn't seem to occur with the HDMI audio output from the TV.

Re: Audio dropouts with 5.1 sound system

I was experiencing this with my Amstrad DRX890.

I recently purchased a HT System which uses the TOSLINK (Optical audio) and this is where I noticed the problem.

Like you, if I piped the sound through the HDMI lead, then all was normal. It was also normal if I took the sound from the TOSLINK output from the TV to the HT system.

Since I was getting annoyed with swapping the outputs using a 3-way switcher, I purchased one with a remote control. It has 4 inputs, and 1 output. The upside of this is that it tidies up the audio signal from the Sky STB and I don't get drop outs anymore.

I bought my Receiver/Amplifier to do all the audio & video switching so I could do without all the other remotes. It's interesting that the TOSLINK switch you bought makes an improvement, though. I guess I'll have to experiment some more.

Re: Audio dropouts with 5.1 sound system

My HT system only has the one TOSLINK input, so I knew that I would need a switcher.

I've been very pleased with this and haven't had a single drop out since I installed it. Previously they were quite common, particularly on SD channels.

The 3-way switcher was fine, just that this is definitely better.

Amazon don't do this any more, but you can get it through Lektropacks or Keene Electronics.

Re: Audio dropouts with 5.1 sound system

I have no idea how well this product will perform, but you are welcome to try:

[ame=http://www.amazon.co.uk/Ex-Pro-Professional-Control-Optical-TOSlink/dp/B005271S4I/ref=sr_1_fkmr2_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1308482560&sr=1-3-fkmr2]Ex-Pro Professional Remote Control Optical TOSlink: Amazon.co.uk: Electronics[/ame]

Other than it being white, not black, it looks the same as the one I purchased. The remote is identical too.

The ones sold by Lektropacks and Keene Electronics are identical to the one you have Scubbie - cheaper too

      No problem.

I pointed out the alternative in case they too run out of stock.

As for the price, anything electronic will drop it's price if you wait long enough. I was happy with the price I paid at the time.
