Personally I would go back and triple check that the Coax cable is connecting from the outside TV aerial to the Sky STB, then to the TV.

If not, bypass the Sky STB and plug the outside TV aerial directly into the TV.

Then select the option to tune the TV to the freeview channels.

Yes, good idea, I had (probably incorrectly) assumed they'd junked the sky box and were going directly into back of tv.

That has nothing to do with Sky, it is the message you will get on any setup which does not support HDCP. I suspect, with this message and the other problems you are have, is that your TV has developed a fault. What is the make and model?

I would add that when Sky turn off HD, it does nothing to the box, it simply removes the option from your viewing card.
