      Losing Sky connectivity again

      Hello again,

I have had good results from this forum in the past, so I wonder if someone could help me out with this problem.

My father-in-law has recently upgraded his Sky package to Sky+ HD, and has had a new box and remote as a result. I had a phone call on Wednesday night to say he had lost all of his Sky connectivity. On popping round I was unable to get any picture from Sky.

Things were resolved this morning by a call to a support number left by the Sky engineer. This was an 07 mobile number which I presume provides support on a temporary basis.

However, he has not been provided with anything in the way of a manual for his Sky set up and I was wondering if this is something that should have been provided.

I can see a 60 page .pdf file on the Sky site, but rather than waste my ink is there anything out there that he can get hold of?

      All replies are appreciated.

He should have received a Sky+HD manual with the new box. If he didn't, tell him to call the installer again to ask for one.

Many thanks for the quick reply, I shall get FIL to contact the installer.

I read somewhere else that manuals are not provided any more, hence all the .pdf files are available on the Sky site. I'll have a dig around for more on this.

Found it. From Sky Help Forum:

"Re: Sky Set Top Box ManualsOptions
      on 11-02-2011 02:19 PM

As part of our bigger picture campaign, we're always at looking of ways of going greener, therefore we have looked at how we inform customers on how to use their Sky+HD or Sky Digiboxes when they are installed. We have therefore taken the decision to remove the equipment manuals from new installations and also self install boxes.

You can now download a copy of the STB manual on Sky.com within the help centre. After clicking on TV, then on Sky+ HD, Quick links are located on the screen to download a copy of the STB manual to your PC. Alternatively you can use the quick links at the top of this page.

Should you require a hard copy of the manual, you can request this by writing to the following freepost address so a copy can be mailed out.

Please detail what manual you require along with your address details."

      Re: Losing Sky connectivity again

Looks like it's all change on this one. Many thanks for the address anyway, I shall request one and save some ink.

Out of interest my FIL reckons that the connectivity glitch was caused by the remote falling off the chair when he fell asleep while viewing.

Is this a possibility, Sky+ HD remotes seem a bit sensitive to me?

It's not the falling off that does anything, it's the picking up ( with careless fingers pressing odd buttons ) that can mess things up. Most, if not all, of FIL's problems, are due to pressing the wrong buttons and getting confused about what to do about it. I speak from personal experience with my 87 year old mother in sheltered housing nearby. Believe me, it's an uphill struggle to keep her Sky system working - her latest trick is to try to use the remote as a mobile phone

This is a lovely reply Kenedin and many thanks.

However, I will talk to the Sky engineer about what he did to regain connectivity.

      Re: Losing Sky connectivity again

Sorry for misleading you there, I based my reply on my own experience. I think Sky's 'green' attitude is more financially based than caring for the planet to be honest. Like many firms they are using the green argument to cover up saving money..
