      Sky Go for Android Tablets

Sky is planning to launch the latest version of Sky Go for Tablets some time today. It will work on the majority of Tablets which have Android 4.0 or later, including Kit Kat.

This version will signify the completion of stage 1 in it's development, with further changes planned for 2014.

With this version the White list has been removed, replacing it with a 'black list' of a few Android tablets which are not to be supported.

With predictions that this Christmas will see the largest sales of tablets ever, this release will be very welcome with many of Sky's customer base.

This version will support tablets with a screen over 7" and allow you to stream content from the 54 channels which are now available to view in accordance with your Sky TV subscription.

Do remember that you can still only have two devices registered if you have Sky Go. You will need to subscribe to Sky Go Extra if you wish to add up to 4 devices and/or download content for viewing when you do not have a broadband connection.

Sky Go Extra is free for those who have a MultiScreen (the new name for Multi-Room) subscription or £5 per month for those who do not.

More info to follow once the launch has happened

Re: Sky Go for Android Tablets

Sky Go Tablet App - Now Available - Sky Community
We are pleased to announce that following a successful beta trial, Sky Go is now publicly available on Android tablets.

PLEASE NOTE THAT IT CAN TAKE UP TO 2 HOURS FOR THE NEW APP TO APPEAR IN THE GOOGLE PLAY STORE

A tablet-only app, “Sky Go Tablet”, is now available to download in the Google Play Store, and is compatible with the majority of Android tablets (7in and above) running Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) and later.

This means that there are temporarily two Sky Go apps in the Google Play Store:

      • “Sky Go” is compatible with selected devices up to 7in, and is the app that has previously been available in the Google Play Store.
      • “Sky Go Tablet” is the newly-launched app, compatible with the majority of Android tablets 7in and above. If you have a 7in tablet which is compatible with both apps, then we recommend using “Sky Go Tablet”, as this will provide a better quality viewing experience.

This launch is the first phase of our 3-phase plan for Android tablet support:

      • Phase 1 gives support to the majority of Android 7 inch tablet devices operating Android 4.0 and above. The user interface of the Sky Go app on Android tablets sees the menus in portrait orientation but video playback in landscape.
      • Phase 2 expected in early 2014 will bring both apps into just one Sky Go app for Android.
      • Phase 3 expected later in summer 2014 will provide an improved user interface and landscape orientation of the menus.

Due to the wide variety of Android tablets, we cannot individually test and guarantee that Sky Go will run on every device but we have successfully tested a number of major devices and run an extensive beta trial with customers to ensure broad support. The only devices on which the service will definitely not run will be the Asus Transformer TF101 (due to unresolvable streaming issues specific to this device) and Amazon Kindle devices.

We have also monitored the impact of Android 4.4 (Kit Kat) which is being rolled out to Nexus devices and we are aware of a few problems to address, which we will aim to resolve soon after launch – particularly around the time it takes for the picture to become clear and with the stream freezing intermittently.

Re: Sky Go for Android Tablets

Now that Sky Go Tablet has been release, some people may experience a report that it won't run on their rooted tablet when they may not have rooted it. Please see the page linked below:

Sky Go - Advice for Rooted Devices - Sky Community

This is a known issue with some tablets apparently, so please make a note should you have this problem.

      Scubbie
When some tabs are made they are given superuser access ( like admin rights on windows) an the sky go app picks this up as being rooted when it's not, to get them to work you have to remove the superuser access binaries. This came up during the beta testing and once they were removed these tabs worked great.
There is also a few bugs on Nexus devices running kk 4.4 and sony tab Z

      Thanks Paul.

For the present time I am watching for issues popping up and of course will welcome any input from others in the know.

It isn't appropriate for me to post all the known issues at this stage. I have been made aware of some of the issues and why they occur, but it is just a handful of devices.

Sam is composing and getting approval to post further details. Once done I shall try to cross post them or a link to the page.

Still not for rooted devices though? Pathetic really considering it's not blocked on PCs that have admin rights. I just don't get Sky any more, they consistently choose to be awkward at every opportunity. I CBA to hide root every time to use it.

      Scubbie,
TBH there were not a great amount of issues after the beta was updated to ver.1.0.7 which was the RC app pushed out yesterday and the issues there are Sky need to deal with now the app has gone live. There are like with any app an issues will crop up once and not again which means its hard to deal. During the whole testing period Sky were very fast in dealing with them. As you've said no need to list them and you know most and of course any help I can be just shout lol.
      coipu,
Sadly this is a very old argument and one that Sky have/will not move away from, they are not the only media provider with this policy and therefore can't see Sky changing this anytime soon.

Sky are not the only provider to prevent rooted devices from using their player. I do not have a comprehensive list, but I am aware of a provider in the states in the same situation.

Ultimately this is down to keeping within the legal contracts that they have with different providers and programming content.

I appreciate that the beta testing works well when then is a good level of feedback. The developers are then in a position to respond quickly too.

It would be nice to say that there are no known issues, but the reality is that this is a very hard claim to make for any software firm, let alone Sky. However thanks to all those involved in the beta group, the issues should be minimal, even those which you didn't pick up (there will be one or two). So please do keep an eye on the forums in order to provide suitable assistance.

I am also aware that the video quality has recently been upgraded and this has helped hugely for the tablets.

As I posted above, it comes down to contracts.

As an example of an old contract, Sky are still blocking The Simpsons from Sky Go.
