      Sky Go Q&A

Sky Help Forum - Sky Go Q&A - Help & Support from the Official Sky Forum
      Hello everyone,

Please find some community questions which have been put to the product team for Sky Go on your behalf.

      Q. What are the timescales for subtitles & audio description being available on Sky Go?
      A. Support for Subtitles and improved access services are currently not scheduled on the Sky Go mobile roadmap for the next 12 months. We continually assess ways to ensure as many customers as possible can enjoy Sky content through Sky Go. Technical investigations into what would be required to add subtitles have taken place, when we can confirm our plans to add this functionality, we will let everyone know.

      Q. How do you treat OS releases - The difference in timescales between a small dot release and a more major release. Is there anything in place to make everyone aware as soon as a new OS release is whitelisted
      A. Our aim is to make sure that Sky Go is supported on a new OS as soon as its available on supported devices. New OS are deployed to Nexus devices first and will then follow to other manufacturers devices later or sometimes never. We are working hard with Google and the other manufacturers to know when they are intending to make an OS update to a device. Sometimes they aren't able to provide us with a great deal of notice. With a major release there is the potential for more things to change so we work hard to get test this OS when these releases will happen and ensure that support is announced on the forums.

      Q. Do you have a statement of intent around Kindle support?
      A. The Amazon Kindle runs a custom version of the Android Operating System that we do not currently support.

      Q. Mountain Lion / Mavericks / Windows 8 support
      A. We are aware that customers are, at times, encountering problems with Sky Go service on Windows 8 and Mountain Lion. Over the next 3-4 months the development team are working towards identifying the issues faced across the platforms, and other supported operating systems. We are building out comprehensive tests and developing our infrastructure, not only to fix the current problems, but to be able to quickly monitor any potential issues before they reach our customers in the future.

      Q. One feature I've seen asked for several times is the ability to choose the quality level when using a mobile device. It's possible on the PC/Mac version

      A. We are considering this for a future release on our roadmap late this year, if we decide to include it we'll update you on this.

      Q. Why is there sometimes a delay in uploading certain shows from Sky 1, for example the last two episodes of Revolution that were shown on Friday evening have yet to appear on Sky Go.
      A. We always aim to bring shows to Sky Go as soon as possible, however editorial decisions and rights agreements can mean this is delayed or will not appear at this moment on the service. You might find the shows available through our Sky On Demand services via a Sky+HD box.

      Q. A statement of intent around support for Linux.

      A. Linux is not on the development roadmap for Sky Go. This is not likely to change for the foreseeable future. Should it get added to the roadmap we will update the forum.

      Q. Sky Sports on Mac - the caption bar covers the controls.
      A. This issue has been investigated, the Sky Sports and Sky Go technology teams are working together on fixing this within the next two months.

      Re: Sky Go Q&A

The "Customer Beta" was announced as becoming available "by the end of September".

I don't think this has been put back unless Scubbie knows better - maybe she meant there has been no further news?

      Re: Sky Go Q&A

Sorry - I've been busy with a few other things these last few weeks.

Basically to the best of my knowledge there is no change on the Sky Go Beta proposition.

With the recent Sky+ app for Android beta group I hope that things will be reviewed in a positive manner and it will be all systems go!

Thank you both. Reading your post Scubbie is the beta NOT going to be an open one? As that's how I read the statement but you said " sky go beta group "

      Re: Sky Go Q&A

I would expect Sky to post an invitation to apply in a similar manner to how they posted for the recent Sky+ app (Android).

It would be pointless IMHO having a beta version if you do not intend to gather the feedback from those using it.

As for how the group will be run, I suspect that it will be similar to how they ran the Beta group for the Sky+ (Android) app.

      Re: Sky Go Q&A

Thank you Scubbie for your reply and yes it would be pointless in not getting feed back from as many customers who have different devices to put the app through it's paces and as it will have been tested before release it's a good thing to release to the wild. I hope those who have an invite will have fun and games with the app and let us who will not be able to take part in the beta testing keep us informed on how it goes as we will have to wait until the end of the year before we can use the app ourselves sadly.

The beta for the Sky+ app was beta only in name. They released the identical code with the same version number that people were testing only a couple of weeks later on the Play Store.

I would guess testing for the SkyGo app may well be a bit more meaningful - if only because the final release is slated for over a month after the "beta" becomes available.

Incidentally, although the statement itself is a bit vague, many are interpreting it as meaning there will be an app that will run on all post Android 4.0 devices but that actual support will be limited as now to specific white-listed models. Personally I think this interpretation of what they said is a tad on the optimistic side .

Either way, it looks like the long wait is finally almost over.
