      Sky Go update for Android

      There is a planned update for Sky Go on the Android happening tonight.

      This should enable support for various devices which were updated to 4.2.2 recently. Hopefully it will also resolve the battery drain issue on the Androids too.

      Wouldn't hold your breath on that one. Although it has taken two weeks to get this fix out (that's 3 times the length of time I had to actually run the app on my new toy!), there was only a tiny change to the code and all that time was taken up by their inflexible testing rules. I'm not even sure they believe those of us who are getting our battery time eaten away by the app. I have complained in writing via the webform but have just about given up now given the replies regarding suggestions I should try .

      Without saying too much, I too posted something and the responding Sky employee was shocked at how much it was draining by.

      Essentially my battery life was only lasting about 9 hours with the app installed. Without it, you could double the time.

      I could have posted up some graphs to show the battery usage, but this wasn't needed.

      Since then the cause has been identified and a fix was promised for this update.

      I have removed it

      It insists on starting on boot
      I disabled that as im rooted so just used autostarts

      so that was fine

      But since the last build when you kill the app it keeps restarting
      I hate apps that do that and they are out of here

      Well, as many of us suspected, Sky have been stringing us along over this 4.2.2 update. It has taken them 2 weeks to get something sorted and this morning Sky Go just started to work again - without any update being issued. Same app same Android update. All they needed was a small change so the servers recognised the new OS version number.

      Basically they have spent the last two weeks testing the android update knowing full well it would work fine once unblocked. They did this because that is just the way they work .

      That said, they still say there will be an update so fingers crossed it will contain a fix for the battery drainage issue. There is no doubt in my mind some part of this app is running in the background and causing very heavy drain.

      Re: Sky Go update for Android

      Looks like they are getting the updated app ready on the Play Store. They have updated some of the description but no sign of the app update ityself yet:

      What's New
      What's in this version:
      * Android 4.2.2 support;
      * Support for Galaxy Tab 2 (GT-P3113) and S3 mini (GT-i8190N , GT-i8190N)
      * Battery drain issue is resolved;
      * Missing downloads and another bug fixes.

      Your battery fix is there Scubbie - let's hope it works .

      Re: Sky Go update for Android

      On android OS sky have hard coded the app (if devices is (say SII)+OS is (say 4.2.1) then allow services to run). For Apple there is no hard code (if iOS is 6.x.x then allow services to run), there is a bit more to it but that's easy way to say it. Sky have denied it all along but when they removed their in house block the app as has been said on here worked, that blew skys no out the window big time and sky are now ignoring all questions about it.

      Some time back I said on this forum about an email from sky turning down the ics sdk that I had seen as the person would not let me put it up here, no long after got into a bit of a scrap with sky over it hence I not been on here much. I'm sorry that I said what I did and was not able to back it up with proof as I was prevented from doing so. Once again sorry and my ex-friend I not speak to any more.
