just thought i would post this at the end of the reply, not sure if it will work or not, not been able to test it, but for the more computer savvy of you out there who are having trouble sending e mails with sky try this (it came to me today)
Install SMTP (only windows XP Pro and server editions)
make sure SMTP service is running
in outlook rather than using smtp.sky.com try using localhost
this will probably need you to tweak with the router (port forwarding on port 25) but in theory this should work, it will use your own machine as the SMTP server to send the mail, might be a bit more reliable than using sky's remote SMTP server, and most likely quicker (not that using remote SMTP servers is slow)

I seem to have cured the problem by changing the AVG Free Email virus scanning settings to use LAN rather than Dial-up under the Properties tag.
I can now send and receive emails in Outlook and Outlook Express.
It looks like I finally cracked it after 4 weeks of hell.

I have setup Outlook 2003 as per attached pic (thanks Ratti3)...However I get the following error messages...anybody have a clue? I get these errors when I press the "test Account Settings" button
Send test e-mail: The secified server was found, but there was no response from the server. PLease verify that the port and SSL information is correct.
Log onto incoming mail server (pop3): The secified server was found, but there was no response from the server. PLease verify that the port and SSL information is correct.
I am guessig the servers are down???tried this at 10/10/06 11:30pm

try setting port forwrding on pop3 port and smtp port on your router, alternatively ring sky and ask them what ports they use for pop3 and smtp, this might be the problem

Have you tried sending an email from your Hotmail account to the Sky email address you think you have created?
If it bounces back, it means that the account has never been properly created & thus there is no mailbox to log into. If it doesn't bounce, it means it is the log on that is the problem.
