SSL error with Sky email collection

I have a Gmail account which collects all my Sky email and I access this from my Android devices. Since 23rd September it has not been able to access my Sky email due to the following error:-

SSL Security Error. [ Help ]
Server returned error "SSL error: unable to verify the first certificate"

The [Help] link brings up the following:-

      What are the SSL requirements?

Gmail uses “strict” SSL security. This means that we’ll always enforce that your other provider’s remote server has a valid SSL certificate. This offers a higher level of security to better protect your information.
What do I need to do if I see an error message?

We suggest contacting the other email provider’s customer support with the error details to help them fix their SSL setup. If the error is not fixed, we will disable your mail fetching and stop retrieving your messages from your other account. Alternatively, you can disable using SSL in Gmail by unchecking ‘Always use a secure connection (SSL) when retrieving mail’on the Accounts tab in your Mail settings. However, this means that your password and email will not be protected while sent over the Internet, so we don’t recommend disabling this.

I have tried switching off SSL but then the connection just times out. Anyone else know about this and whether it is likely to be fixed any time soon?

Re: SSL error with Sky email collection

There are lots of complaints on the "official" forum about this, but no answers. Will just need to wait for sky/yahoo to resolve it.

      Edit.
One posts suggests changing the server to pop.mail.yahoo.co.uk and this does seem to work so it looks like the problem is a Sky one this time, not yahoo.

Re: SSL error with Sky email collection

      Have had the same problem.
      Code:
fetchmail: Server certificate verification error: unable to get local issuer certificate
fetchmail: Broken certification chain at: /C=US/O=Symantec Corporation/OU=Symantec Trust Network/CN=Symantec Class 3 EV SSL CA - G3
fetchmail: This could mean that the server did not provide the intermediate CA's certificate(s), which is nothing fetchmail could do anything about. For details, please see the README.SSL-SERVER document that ships with fetchmail.
fetchmail: This could mean that the root CA's signing certificate is not in the trusted CA certificate location, or that c_rehash needs to be run on the certificate directory. For details, please see the documentation of --sslcertpath and --sslcertfile in the manual page.
fetchmail: OpenSSL reported: error:14090086:SSL routines:SSL3_GET_SERVER_CERTIFICATE:certificate verify failed
      fetchmail: SSL connection failed.
Checked my ssl certificate directory and couldn't find any certificates from Symantec so downloaded and installed one from their website: https://knowledge.symantec.com/suppo...LINK&id=AR2061

seawright, who is it that needs to add the certificate? Sky,Gmail or the end user?
Please excuse my lack of knowledge.

The end user. It would normally be downloaded automatically but for some reason the chain is broken.

      Edit:
      Go to: https://www.digicert.com/help/
and input the address of Sky's POP3 server: pop.tools.sky.com:995
      on the form there.

Re: SSL error with Sky email collection

      Thanks seawright,

I had been using that site to check sky's POP server and could see the broken link, however when I tested Sky's IMAP server (imap.tools.sky.com:993) using the same site there was no broken link even though the certificates appeared the same.
This led me to believe that the problem lay with Sky's POP server.

As you can guess I'm not too clued up on this.

I'm no expert either. I just look for quick fixes.
I leave it to the experts to implement the final solution.

Many thanks for this helpful suggestion. I have changed the mail server on both my Sky email addresses in the Gmail settings and it has solved the problem. Gmail is now collecting my Sky emails as it did before.

Re: SSL error with Sky email collection

Believe it or not, but the Sky POP server is now working O.K. again!
No broken link when testing via the digicert diagnostic tool as suggested by seawright.

Yes, right again. I have switched my Gmail settings back to pop.tools.sky.com and it now appears to be working perfectly. Thanks once again for the information!
