      Spam!

Afternoon All, Can someone please humour me or point me to the right thread! :-)
Day to day I deal with my Sky email on my iPad and iPhone and everything works perfectly, all the junk/spam ends up in the junk folder, trash in the trash etc etc but yesterday I fired up my 7 year old steam driven laptop for the first time in a couple of months and it proceeded to download a large amount of spam to my Inbox! I spent most of yesterday afternoon sorting it out and deleting it all :-( it is running Outlook 2007 OK also getting a bit ancient now! The spam settings within Outlook are set to high filtration.
So after tidying my inbox up I thought I would boot it up again this morning and it downloaded a further 5 spam emails to my inbox. So I took the opportunity to check! The same 5 emails appear in the junk mail box on the iPad and iPhone and if I log in to my Sky email via the web site the same 5 mails appear in the spam box on there!
What is going on? Is it something to do with my Outlook settings or is it something to do with Yahoo?
BTW the laptop is set up for pop3 and not all the spam goes to the inbox on Outlook I would estimate 50% of it.

      Cheers in advance.
      Kev.

      Re: Spam!

It really depends on the messages and what else you use to pick up the spam emails.

My AV software integrates with various clients and helps to filter out many of the spam messages.

Once you receive a spam message, do you just delete them or mark them as spam? This helps your client to filter out future messages and can also report them through a suitable network.

      Re: Spam!

How have you set the spam settings on the Web settings? There are 3 options for Spam, I have chosen to 'download but prefix with Spam', which it never does.

I have Thunderbird set up to mark Spam which I have previously marked as such and can then delete the lot with one click. I stopped using Outlook some time ago as it was giving me too many problems.

      Re: Spam!

Ok thanks for that guys, I have found that setting Isetme and have set it as you suggest,
'Download but with prefix spam' They are still going in my inbox but are prefixed with 'bulk' but at least it makes them easier to pick out for deletion!
How come the iPad deals with spam so much better is it just better software?

      Re: Spam!

There is no real substitute for your own eyes when it come to recognising Spam. I don't trust any program 100% to allow it to auto delete any message. One of the ways spam is identified is by the number of addressees a message has, this can lead to perfectly legitimate newsletters being dumped, which has happened to me in the past. Gmail had much better filters than Yahoo but even that made mistakes, so I check the spam folder on line every so often. Lucky I did as it had gobbled up some important emails. I must say in that respect I prefer the way Yahoo allows you to download everything and leaves you to decide whether it is spam or not.

      Re: Spam!

I never give my isp email addresses to anyone except companies and site registrations that I don't care about.
So they keep the SPAM and people I want to hear from go to one of my personal email addresses.

I've never used isp email addresses as primary contacts.
This probably originates from the days before isp's added webmail access and I wanted to access my emails at home and at Uni.
I had a hotmail account before the Evil Empire (MS) bought them but I prefer gmail currently.

I did look around at other free providers recently but gmail still seems to be the best.

      /Rambling rant is over!

I prefer gmail's spam filters currently as I know what they will block wrongly.
Yahoo's are annoying IMHO as I don't know what they will block and sometimes they allow the first email but block the rest from certain sites I visit which is really annoying as it seems random.
I also seem to get lots more Spam on the yahoo addresses despite rarely using them.
