      It wasn't me!

You may find that you had a lot of spam in your Spam folder and it is now coming through to you.

For the record I have have several Yahoo! email accounts for some years. I don't get plagued by spam, but I do get the odd message coming through. I block the address from which they come from and have got quite a long list of blocked addresses now.

I have also have various people whom are members or were members of the Yahoo! forums I used to subscribe to. It seems that someone has been harvesting from these forums and that there are people who are gullible out there as the links keep getting clicked by some of them.

However, if anyone wishes to have lots of offers for Viagra I can always put your email address forward. Personally I don't have the anatomy that they wish to enlarge...

I seem to get enlargement offers for both genders of body parts!

Seriously though, I'd have to say Yahoo's spamminess appears far worse than Gmail. I have spam in gmail, but its mostly the sort I've told to be spam (so really just junk I signed up for, or bought products from, adobe, ebuyer, some other internet company) with yahoo I get alot of spam that is obviously just trickery from random senders. Currently I have 380 spam emails in my yahoo mail since January. Almost all are from previously unknown senders offering support for my loan or as you say, enlargement offers! but also the first page is entirely full of emails from the future. 2037. Its a technique to make sure the emails always reach the top of the list of emails, and is so easy for a mail providing company to spot and filter out. But yahoo allow these ""viagrAa PhRmaCy" mails through from 2037. It couldn't be easier to spot. I've even contacted yahoo about it, to no avail.

Also, yahoo messenger (like g+). Utterly ridiculous security too imo. Anyone with your username (or just guessing it) can send a request to be a friend. That's sort of ok, but... these requests have to be manually be dealt with as they are pop ups from the messenger interface, and for each you have to choose firstly, no thanks I don't want to reply, then no thanks I don't want to add them. It is not possible to block new requests or have them automatically declined. I takes about 5 seconds per request. if you have 10 of these annoying requests that's an annoying minute. A friend of mine had a hundred or so the other day. ridiculous. so just a warning to maybe stay away from messenger too if you are new to it.

The latest user complaint in the BTyahoo mail fiasco forum:

I'm beginning to see some spam coming in on some of my AddressGuard disposable yahoo.co.uk addresses that have never had spam before. That's worrying. The one I saw today was one that is particularly private - but now its out there and the spam and the malware are flowing in. I am now assuming that any and all information ever provided to BT or BTYahoo! is potentially available to the world.

Hope this is resolved and EXPLAINED soon.

Also wrt original poster. I've had no issues with my gmail account in the last few days, all responsive and as it should be. Hope it all sorts out ok.

Perhaps I should state that the majority of spam I receive has the added '[BULK]' added to the subject, as per my account settings.

The recent issue of receiving spam from various contacts is a new one and I suspect that it is likely that some have had their accounts compromised or their computers have become infected with something.

Not new at all I don't think. Well certainly not for me. It was about two years ago I contacted yahoo via support chat about the problem. And with the more recent problem, people are not necessarily doing anything wrong, insecure or having any viruses, it seems to be happening to yahoo servers without any apparent direct attack on the users equipment whatsoever, or then being spoofed or tricked. That's what is so worrying about the situation. The user is seemingly helpless against the attacks.

there's yet another mail article here about this years attacks from Channel 4, 10 days ago:

Yahoo!'s email system hacked by criminal spammers - Channel 4 News

Unfortunately because Yahoo want to keep it as quiet as possible, people are unaware they didn't do anything wrong, perhaps go to an independent IT firm believing they have a virus, who may then take any number of actions, and the true scale of the events are unknown. As a yahoo user I have not had a single email from them detailing the problem or giving me any advice whatsoever. And this despite Yahoo being the 3rd largest email provider worldwide. If this were Gmail or Apple or Microsoft it would be literally headline news. Every day.
