Confused Does IMAP protocol require a user_agent string? Even if it does this could always be spoofed. If access to your mail account is via the internet how does Yahoo know whether you are using a mobile device or desktop PC?

Re: Sky Email Changing from Google to Sky Yahoo! Mail

I only joined Sky a month or so back, and I'm becoming increasingly glad I decided to give their half-hearted attempt at email provision a wide berth. I was hugely annoyed after signing up to Sky to discover that they didn't actually provide their own POP/SMTP mail servers, as I specifically asked one of their reps about this before signing up.

Instead of using their Sky Gmail system, I just decided to make a clean break and set up my own independant Gmail accounts for each of my family members. With the aid of an SMTP server via this wonderful forum I have been able to set these Gmail accounts up to work properly with my domain name, and also not show any "sent on behalf of" information etc on my outgoing mails. It took a bit of sussing out initially, but now it's done my email accounts are effectively independant of Sky, so whatever they choose to do it won't affect me thankfully.

One really useful thing I discovered about Gmail is that if you want use POP for your mail, it is still possible to have recent mails delivered to multiple machines/devices. In order to do this you have all the machines check for mail at "recent:joe.bloggs@gmail.com" (Obviously insert your own address!) Has been working a treat for me so far. Might be a useful tip for somebody!

Let's hope that the email address doesn't change to xxxxxxx@yahoo.co.uk because I block all Yahoo addresses on my email system because of the amount of spam that I get from Yahoo addresses. I've tried reporting abusers of Yahoo to Yahoo, but they clearly don't want to know

The information available so far confirms that it will remain a "sky.com " address.

As for reporting to Yahoo, there are procedures, but the spammers set up so many, it is an endless task.

Personally I find that they use a range of different addresses and that Yahoo is just one of many sources. However I know a fair number of people with Yahoo accounts, so this isn't something I would want to block out-right.

Re: Sky Email Changing from Google to Sky Yahoo! Mail

I shall take the opportunity to drop Sky email as it is not my main email account and I use it only for messages from Sky. I welcome the option of not being required to have a Sky email mailbox.

But if I were to keep it, I would surely have to change my SMTP & POP settings, as the mail servers are set to smtp.gmail.com & pop.gmail.com.

Mine too, and it has worked flawlessly for years.

Looking through my Junk folders, the majority of senders are using @yahoo.xx addresses. Which does not say much for their filtering system. In the words of our Bard 'And forward, though I cannot see, I guess and fear'.

Re: Sky Email Changing from Google to Sky Yahoo! Mail

I have a yahoo mail account. Have had it since I first had a dial-up connection to internet. Many years. Anything from Sky comes into this account as it was registered with them before I took out broadband with them. I received a weekly newsletter into my yahoo account for many years and then suddenly it stopped arriving. I contacted them to find out why and they said it had bounced back to them. Contacted yaoo about this and they told me they do not bounce any emails and it must be Sky. I did not believe this so I resubscribed to the newsletter with the sky email address and have received it ever since which proves that it was Yahoo all along. I am now wondering if it will be bounced when Sky email is taken over by Yahoo.

You will have to change them but afaik *.gmail.com are not official mail servers for Sky email. For POP I use pop.tools.sky.com which resolves to: bskyb-pop.google.com When it changes to Yahoo, Sky will just change it in their DNS database.

*.gmail.com are not official mail servers for Sky email.
They work perfectly well and there have been occasions when the 'official' Sky server went down with no effect on the Google servers. It was given as a work around some years ago when the Sky servers were experiencing difficulties and I have never bothered changing them back. I expect the work around for the new set up will be pop.mail.yahoo.com and smtp.mail.yahoo.net when the Sky server goes down.

You misunderstand me. Sky say that the changeover will be transparent for customers that have accepted the new T&Cs provided that they don't use IMAP for desktop PCs. That is probably true but will only apply where Sky recommended mail servers have been used for SMTP & POP settings.
