can't send email via outlookexpress
background
My husband has the main sky account and I'm an additional name so I have my own sky email address.
I've set up my netbook to access my email via outlook express6, no problems at all (will i live to rue saying that)
on my main computer I have used the exact same settings in oe and although I can receive my emails from sky and those from other accounts, I can't send anything out, any ideas on sorting this out would be very helpful. The os is XP if that's of any help.
thanx

Re: can't send email via outlookexpress
If you can send from the netbook and not from the PC then I would compare the SMTP settings between them. Have you perhaps left the tick out of the "My server requires authentification" in the Outgoing mail server?

Re: can't send email via outlookexpress
I don't know if this is related but yesterday I had problems with the SMTP servers and spent ages trying to find out what was wrong, I even phoned sky and all my settings were correct.
I also pull posts from Gmail (Google) and they are the same as used by Sky and noticed that that was also playing up. Then Mail would work and stop again without making any changes all day so I came to the conclusion it was the Google mail servers at fault.
I am no novice at setting up Email accounts and help friends and family do it all the time but when you are told there is no system problem when there is it makes it very hard to get it working.
This morning they seem OK so far, I wonder if it was anything to do with the internet being banned in the News today. I even tried using the IP's for the servers in case it was a DNS issue.

Re: can't send email via outlookexpress
everything is the same and the "My server requires authentification" is ticked
it's not intermittant, I've tried sorting this over the last week, I've even resorted to temporaly switching off my firewall in case that was blocking the out going mail.
I'd rather not phone sky coz the computer in question isn't anywhere near the phone and I don't have a hand-held one.

It shouldn't be ticked

Re: can't send email via outlookexpress
Yes it should, Its the "log on using secure password authentification" that shouldn't be ticked.
@derbrain: If you click "settings" alonside "My server requires authentification" you will find the "use same settings as incoming server", however you should only do that on the sky account. Any other accounst will need the sky authentification details.
Unfortunately this will lead to your sky emai address being set as the reply address or appended to the email. To overcome this see here.
Might I suggest downloading Thunderbird - Reclaim your inbox and trying that.Last edited by moleman; 29-01-11 at 03:23 PM. Reason: Added info on extra accounts

Re: can't send email via outlookexpress
I have a similar problem
I have the primary account my wife has an secondary.
We both use the same laptop and outlook. We can recieve emails to both account but can only send from mine.
I have checked the settings are identical both in outlook and the pop settings on sky. I have also downloaded sp3 as mentioned in some other threads.
Any ideas? Could it be sky wont allow the secondary users?
The message reads "
Task 'Donna - Sending and Receiving' reported error (0x8004210B) : 'The operation timed out waiting for a response from the sending (SMTP) server. If you continue to receive this message, contact your server administrator or Internet service provider (ISP).' "

Re: can't send email via outlookexpress
Sky certainly allow secondary accounts, up to 9 additional accounts.
Try changing the server details in your wife's accounts to go direct to the Gmail servers.
Incoming mail server = pop.gmail.com
Outgoing mail server = smtp.gmail.com
All the other settings remain the same.
Make sure the username is set to <name>@sky.com
