      E-mail error message

This morning, after satisfactorily using Windows Live Mail ( Windows 7) I am now receiving the message "connection to the server has failed" and I cannot send or receive messages. I can access my internet browsers, but cannot use SKYPE or E-mail. I am on the Orpington, Kent exchange and use Sky line rental. The following is the message received when I attempt to send a "Test" message. Any thoughts how I can unblock this would be very much appreciated.

The connection to the server has failed.

      Subject 'Test'
      Server: 'smtp.tools.sky.com'
Windows Live Mail Error ID: 0x800CCC0E
      Protocol: SMTP
      Port: 465
      Secure(SSL): Yes
      Socket Error: 10013

Turn off your AV/Firewall and try to send/receive.

      Re: E-mail error message

Try this as a temporary work-around. Go into your email account settings and change the incoming server to pop.gmail.com and the out going to smtp.gmail.com. The rest of the settings remain as they are. This just means you are going direct to the Gmail servers instead of going through Sky's.

      1. Yes. I have turned off the firewall and anti malware etc. to no effect.

      2. I have also altered the settings to "gmail" and still cannot access windows Live Mail.

      But thanks anyway.

I am getting a bit desperate for any assistance.

Then it looks like a security issue as User05 suggested. Instead of just turning them off, as modern security products don't always do as you tell them, start in Safe Mode with Networking and see if you can send/receive.

In Win7 press the Windows key and type msconfig, hold the Ctrl key and press enter. Click the Boot tab, then Safe boot and Network, then restart. Untick these to go back to Normal boot.

      Re: E-mail error message

After logging off and logging on again, I can now acces my e-mail via the "gmail" workaround, thank you ISITME.

How can I get in via my original settings, I wonder.

      Re: E-mail error message

If it is working I would just leave them as they are. I have been using these settings for some time now, ever since the Sky servers messed up some time ago. I never bothered changing back and they have given me no problems.

Thank you. I shall stay but try the original settings from time to time and then I can keep "gmail" as a first reserve.
