Re: Sky -email and outlook problem
My first post.
I have recently joined SKY Mail, and I need a little help.
I have always used Microsoft Outlook for accessing my emails, but having switched to SKY Mail, I appear to be having problems.
All my emails are there when I log into SKY Mail, and all my emails appear on my HTC Desire HD Phone, but for some reason, only a fraction appear in Outlook.
I am 100% happy with how I have set up the email, otherwise, I wouldn't receive any.
An example today, received 8 emails on the Sky web site, and on my phone, but only 2 of them on Outlook.
There doesn't seem to be any pattern to what is received and what isn't, for example, I recently received 2 emails from the National Lottery via the Sky web site, and my phone, but only 1 in outlook. Any Ideas

Re: Sky -email and outlook problem
Currently what appears to be happening is that the first device is downloading the email and deleting it from the server. This is normal for POP3.
Firstly set up everything for IMAP. Then change the settings on both your phone & Outlook so that the emails aren't deleted when you download them.
Then send yourself a couple of test emails from a different account and see what happens.

Re: Sky -email and outlook problem
My advice would be different, as I dislike using SMTP. (Too many duplicated folders)
Change your account username: from 'username@sky.com' to 'recent:username@sky.com' it will then download mail from the last 30 days regardless of whether it had already been downloaded by another client.
See ==Using POP on mobile or multiple devices== here.

Re: Sky -email and outlook problem
I understand your response Moleman, but surely that over complicates things?
Windows Live mail offers a reasonable solution. You can use Windows Live Mail on any device. It accesses your email and marks anything as read no matter where you read it.
The emails still exist on-line, so you can always access them elsewhere.
From my understanding IMAP should work in a similar manner.
Creating 2 POP3 accounts would mean that you don't know which email has been read or where.
If you respond, then the wrong email address could become associated and any replies would end up in only one account. Yes the 'reply to' address can be changed, but this could be overlooked.

Re: Sky -email and outlook problem
All vernonjsmith need to do is add the characters recent: to the username in one of his clients. Doesn't sound too complected to me, especially when you see the mess IMAP makes to your currently set up folders.
Windows Live mail offers a reasonable solution. You can use Windows Live Mail on any device. It accesses your email and marks anything as read no matter where you read it.
But vernonjsmith is using Outlook and its the fact that his mails are being marked as read by the first client to access his account that is causing his problem. I am assuming he wants all the emails to go to both clients.

True
From my understanding IMAP should work in a similar manner.
IMAP synchronises the local folders with those on-line so it isn't downloading them in the sense that a POP client does.
Creating 2 POP3 accounts would mean that you don't know which email has been read or where.
There's only one POP account, but 2 POP clients so yes its up to the user to remember which ones he has already dealt with.
If you respond, then the wrong email address could become associated and any replies would end up in only one account. Yes the 'reply to' address can be changed, but this could be overlooked
I am assuming he is accessing his SKY email using the same credentials on both devices so there should be no problem.
Hope that helps to clarify things

Re: Sky -email and outlook problem
No problem with me Moleman, I hope the above posts might serve to help the OP too.
As for me mentioning Windows Live Mail, this was to serve as an example of how it accesses the Hotmail accounts and to compare it with POP3 & IMAP.
