Accessing Sky email services driving me mad!

I'm a new Sky customer... and, while I can access web-mail, I'm tearing my hair out trying to move forwards from this point.

My objective is to send email using SMTP - nothing I've tried works... and Sky's documentation, while verbose, fails to give a clear, concise, list of settings required.

One client I've tried is Thunderbird (3.1.1) - and I configure it:

      --
      Server name : smtp.tools.sky.com
      Port : 465
      Connection security : SSL/TLS
      Authentication method : Normal password.
      Username : firstname.surname@sky.com
      --
If I deviate from these settings, I get fairly sensible error messages telling me to change them. When I try to send an email, I get an indication that Thunderbird has connected - then the error message "Login to smtp.tools.sky.com failed" - and I'm invited to enter a new password.

I've not wrongly entered my password... I've tried changing my password via the sky website - and I can use FIRSTNAME.SURNAME with the same password to log in and use webmail.

      What am I doing wrong??

BTW - my account is set up to allow me to fetch my sky mail using POP... and I'm getting a similar problem there. I've configured the standard unix "fetchmail":

      --
      poll pop.tools.sky.com protocol pop3:
username "firstname.surname@sky.com" password "secretpassword" is "valid@mydomain.com" here
      options ssl
      fetchall
      --

The debug trace of the interaction reads:

      --
      fetchmail: 6.3.17 querying pop.tools.sky.com (protocol POP3) at Sat Jul 24 22:08:27 2010: poll started

If no-one can point out what obvious error I'm making, can anyone suggest the most effective way to get Sky to resolve this?

Close your mail client and enter the details in the following link:

      www.sky.com/unlock

      Try sending/receiving after that.

Re: Accessing Sky email services driving me mad!

I'm a relatively new sky user and i'm having the same problem. I am well versed in setting up email accounts but i'm damned if I can get my sky account to work on mac osx mail. I've setup an additional user (the wife) and hers works ok. I've tried www.sky.com/unlock and it says my password is incorrect. Obviously, the username and password combination i'm using lets me login to the webmail, so i'm at a loss. I've telephoned customer services but the operative I spoke to couldn't help. He seemed a bit 'lost' over the phone when I tried to explain www.sky.com/unlock to him. He has passed my query over to the techs at webmail but i've had no reply yet. Maybe someone here can help....

Re: Accessing Sky email services driving me mad!

Webmail are just a small group of guys 'clued up' in e-mail issues. Assuming you have done the following:

      - Logged in successfully to sky.com with your user and pass and enabled pop/imap
      - Configured outlook or whatever e-mail client you're using with the pop/imap and smtp settings

If the unlock captcha tool does not work due to the user and pass not being accepted, yet you can login to sky.com with them successfully, then the username needs 'synced' on sky's end. Tier 1 or webmail can both do this if you ask them. Once it is synced with google mail, then try unlocking the captcha again. It should work and then sending/receiving should be successful.
