outgoing mail problems
Hi
I'm using windows mail (outlook express) with vista basic and my outgoing mail has all of a sudden stopped working, I'm using POP3 for the incoming mail and SMTP for the outgoing mail, all the settings appear to be ok, server port numbers etc. Incoming mail is fine, just can't send outgoing mail - does anyone have any ideas? I've been into the settings and they seem to default yo POP3 without the chance to change to IMAP.
Help much needed!
thanks
Tim

Re: outgoing mail problems
well, you can use IMAP if you enable it online...
as for other settings - might be worth wiping the account in Windows Mail and start it again from scratch...sometimes works...I've currently got 3 Sky email accounts running through Outlook 2007 without an issue...-------------------------------------------

Re: outgoing mail problems
Do you mean that emails from your sky email account are not getting through or those sent from a different pop account?
My personal (non sky) pop account stopped sending out emails on Tuesday. I've changed nothing on my email client software. I can send using my sky account.
Checking for spam blocking I have found that Sky seem to be listing IP's on Spamhaus to stop non Sky accounts sending mail.
This is the message:
Ref: PBL*****
***.***.***.*** is listed on the Policy Block List (PBL)
Outbound Email Policy of Sky Broadband for this IP range:
It is the policy of Sky Broadband that email sent from this IP address should be sent out only via the dedicated outbound mail server for the Sky Broadband service.
Questions about this policy should be directed to abuse@sky.com. Configuration information for most Mail Clients in common use appears in the Sky Email section of the Sky Help Centre portal.
(*** information removed by me)
is this a new policy?
Note to moderator:
If this is not the same problem could you move this post to the correct place? Thanks.

Re: outgoing mail problems
This is NOT Sky - I've had a few calls on this and it's the mail hosting that's implemented PBL...Sky don't block you using your own domain as I do it and haven't had any issues...
Contact you hosting company and ask them about PBL...Taken from their website...
"Additional IP address ranges are added and maintained by the Spamhaus PBL Team, particularly for networks which are not participating themselves..."
Basically, Sky aren't a member of this project but if they see your IP spamming/sending bulk email then they'll probably take it on themselves to block you...
Well, that's what a colleague in Abuse said anyway...-------------------------------------------

Re: outgoing mail problems
did you reboot the router? if so, it will probably have an IP address in a different range and so not get blocked...
worth keeping an eye on...-------------------------------------------

Re: outgoing mail problems
No. No re-booting.
It just started again.
What I have done is to inform my POP host, email sky, unlist my IP at Spamhaus. I don't think any of these actually helped though.
Thnaks for the advice though

Re: outgoing mail problems
turns out that there was a problem with my windows mail (running on vista), a message had got stuck in the outbox and was preventing any out going mail leaving, I downloaded update KB941090 v2 from microsoft (which is a fix for this and other windows mail problems) and now everything is fine, so was microsoft not sky! Thanks to all those that replied trying to help!
