Hastle free Imap set up with Windows mail on vista.

First off, if your using a different mail client, you should be able to achieve the same, but the settings will be in a different place .

Make sure imap is turned on for your sky email account, log is via the sky website and the settings tab.

time to get configuring windows mail.

Create a new account, go to tools, accounts, add, email account.
Complete your display name and email address.
On the next page select imap as the type.
      incoming mail

      imap.tools.sky.com

      outgoing

      smtp.tools.sky.com

tick out going server requires authentication.

next enter your logon details. dont forget your @sky.com...

tick do not download mail now, as there's more to do yet

go to tools accounts and click on then new imap account you just set up, then properties, click on the advanced tab. enable ssl for both

incoming port will alter automatically to 993 alter the outgoing port to 465.

      nearly there.......

actally you could now use this but the folders will be a mess and it would download all mail on the server and deleting via the client would not work.

      click on the IMAP tab.

check all mail is enabled by default and so are special folders....
most info advises to disbale this, however it can be used to our advantage.

in the top box (root folder path)

      type exactly this

      [Google Mail]

now rename the special folders to the same as the online folders, this will allow deleting mail from the server and proper use of the spam folder

Change Sent Items to Sent Mail
Drafts path is fine as it is
Change Deleted Items path to Bin
      Change Junk path to Spam

      click apply and ok

your now good to go, when you delete items they go to bin correctly, where you can leave them and they'll delete automatically after 30 days or you can empty the bin in the same way you would with the traditional deleted items.

Before you hit the sent receive button, think of how much mail you may have on the server, you may want to stop some folders from syncing, you can do this by clicking on then imap.tools.sky.com folder, you will see tick boxes to enable/disable syncing, one you may like to stop is All Mail.
Also if you right click on the folders you can change what is synced, ie for Spam you may want headers only.....

      Hi

I have followed everything up to click on IMAP folder, is this in outlook on accessing email on the internet. If it is in outlook I get a box with a query option in it.

Really appreciate your help since switching to IMAP outlook is driving me insane.
