Demand for a SkyUser SMTP server

      Update: 14th February 2008

We have now brought our SMTP Service online, please read this thread for more info.

      http://www.skyuser.co.uk/forum/websi...rver-live.html

If SkyUser were to bring online their own SMTP server, so those of you who have their own email address could send their own email through our SMTP service, would you use it?

Please answer the Poll and then post with an indication of how many email address's you would need to add to our SMTP server for authorisation.

This would be a free service for our registered members, and would have a few ground rules, to prevent spamming etc

There would be no adverts appended to the email, and you would be able to use whatever email address you wanted, for sending your email, instead of the @sky.com one that Google are forcing you to do.

I pay 2.99 a year to register my domain name and get free pop3, what more could you want?

What a good idea this is, it should help a lot of people out. Personally I will not use this as I have other options open to me.

Definitely worth using, I've the same email address since I first went online with dialup and old Freeserve, as was - redirected via Bigfoot. At the moment it's dead in the water, sort of

Re: Demand for a SkyUser SMTP server

Theoretically we should be able to do this soon, its just a matter of demand and if it would be used or not.

it'd be a great service if you offered it, but what happens 12-24 mths down the line. ie what happens if you have to withdraw support or start charging...... could damage the sites reputation unless you are very confident that it wouldn't happen and you could always cope with full demand (ie what it every registered member tried to take advantage of it)??

Re: Demand for a SkyUser SMTP server

For however long we supported it, has to be a bonus for anyone struggling with this. The software to do it is free, we already have 2 dedicated servers, which we are committed to paying for long term. The only way we would not support it, is if a member abuses it. In that scenario we would delete his SMTP account so therefore he / she couldn't use it.

As for charging people, we have no intentions of ever charging any of our members for our services / tools.

The only way we would ever pull it, is if SkyUser stopped been visited. As long as Sky continue to do things half cocked, I cannot see that day coming soon. Considering we have broken all records for visitors in the last 7 days.
