As for the point about Google trawling email - "Google .. uses this scanning technology to deliver targeted text ads and other related information" , and I don't want that. All I want is for Sky to provide me with Internet access and a simple mail server.

Yep I understand where you are coming from, but you need to remember that you get what you pay for. As Sky is probably the cheapest BB product around, then you have to expect and accept that the cost will be subsidised thru other means (of which you desribe). If you dont want this, then you'll have to go with an ISP that costs more and doesn't require this additional subsidy.

Re: Solved non-Sky email address re outgoing emails

Guys just found out the bad news after wroking out you can no longer use sky's smtp servers.

As a temporary solution ive found this useful link:-

      Free SMTP Server

It basically uses your own pc as an smtp server so all you need to do is point your smtp settings within your email client to your localhost ip address which is 127.0.0.1 and this is then sent to the smtp server and then sent out using your dns.

Just tried it and works a treat!

      Update,

Just found an even better program called mailenable which is a must for vista users as you can't enable smtp services:-

MailEnable - high performance mail server software

Installs the smtp service so you don't need the program running in the background. Really impressed with this program considering its free!

One of my accounts is with Plusnet, so I followed your directions in your post - but adding mail.plus.net, but it is not connecting to the Plusnet server

Any advice or has anyone else have info receiving email from through Plusnet

      thanks

Do you get any sort of errors when sending? You enabled SSL, did you change the port number for the server and input your user name (with @sky.com) and password?

Re: Solved non-Sky email address re outgoing emails

This is all very annoying I agree. Personally, I don't have a problem with any of this as although I have a Sky email address (which I don't use), I only ever use a Hotmail address which I manage via Windows Live Mail, so the Sky SMTP issues don't affect me.

However, my wife uses an email from another domain which she manages via Outlook so this has affected her. I have managed to tweak her settings in Outlook and have let her use my Sky email details so she can still send her emails, albeit from me on behalf of her.

I have a quick question if anyone can answer it, do Sky allow you to set up multiple email addresses, i.e. can my wife have her own separate Sky email address so at least her outbound emails look like they're from her & not from her husband ??

Re: Solved non-Sky email address re outgoing emails

As stated in my previous post, simplest way to still send email is to use your own computer as an smtp server, that way you will never need to mess around with your account settings.

Simplest and cheapest way of getting around this problem.
