      Mine seems to be working now ... I had to re-enter my password though (which I had done before, but obviously there must have been some other problem as well at the time).

      Thanks for the suggestion kimc ...... but nope!

      Moleman, I hadn't done 'pinging' before so it took a little while to find out what to do but you learn something new everyday and yes, I do get a response. From that, am I correct in assuming the problem is with my email client, or at least the settings? although I have checked them so many times I am sure they are correct.

      I've widened my firewall rules just to make sure that is not the problem and there is nothing in it's logs to suggest it could be the culprit!

      This is getting very frustrating ...... heeeeeelp!

      What firewall is it? I would be tempted to disable it, try the email client, see if the error changes and if not turn it back on.

      I'm part way to solving the problem. Shutting down the firewall made no difference but by shutting down all my running programs, the email clients work perfectly! At least I now know broadly where the problem is and it's just a case of reintroducing each program to see which one is causing the conflict ...... very strange though because everything worked in harmony before switching my ISP to Sky.

      Anyway, thanks everyone for the input and in due course I will post details of the 'offending' program.
