      550 Relay problem in Outlook

      Hi Guys

      I hope somebody can help me because I am going mad with this problem. I have sky as my stmp server (sky.stmp.com), and my pop3 as my business email (mail.mybusiness.co.uk). Eveything works ok - however I wanted to play with rules in outlook to automate forwarding certain emails to my hotmail account - yet I get an error of 550 relay not permitted.

      Can anyone tell me how to get round this as I dont know what to do and whether the error is with fasthosts, sky or outlook! What i dont understand is I can manually forward emails ok, so why do the rules fail when outlook tries to do it automatically?

      Any help is really appreciated - hope it will be a whizz for soembody on here

      I think the smtp server should be smtp.tools.sky.com. Thats how mine is set up and it works ok

      Hi Mike,

      Can you cut and paste the full error you get please so we can see the path that the email is taking.

      Do you have more than one email account on your machine? If so is the Business account the default account

      Also, could you paste the Rule you have created too - or do a screenshot whichever is easier. You can blank out any personal details of course!

      Wow - quick and people on here are friendly! Thank you so much.

      Ok just so I am clear my email works currently in terms of mail coming in and out, the only problem is when I apply rules to Outlook. The error I get is

      Code:
      The following recipient(s) could not be reached:
      
            Mike Owen (m40wen_at_hotmail.com) on 05/12/2007 00:01
                  550 relay not permitted

      My Outlook account is set to:
      Code:
      User Name: Sales
      Email:Sales_at_allaboutgaming.co.uk
      Incoming mail server (Pop3): mail.allaboutgaming.co.uk
      Outgoing (SMTP): smtp.sky.com
      This account is the only account I use for Outlook 2003 - there is nothing else on there. The rules I have made (bless me) are :-

      Code:
      Move New Messages
      From Ebay
      and forward to m40wen_at_hotmail.com
      Hope that makes sense. I am starting on anew business venture so am on really playing with bits to see how it all works - or doesnt in this case!

      *EDIT: Sorry measnt to say my website is hosted by fasthosts

      What's that Googlemail address doing in there? Do you have a google mail account or is that address replacing your hotmail one?

      Also, I would edit your post to take out the first parts of your email address so that any roving spambots don't pick it up.

      Sorry I copied the wrong one - have edited post and taken out the "@". Also could the problem be something to do with norton perhaps? The email I get from system admin comes back pretty quick.

      Is it instantaneously quick? I suppose it could be - it's been a while since I used norton. Perhaps try disabling it for a bit to test.

      There is an alternative for your domain email account. But let's try and fix this first, I hate to be defeated.

      Could you paste the email headers from the returned mail on here?

      Lol - I am the same. Its now a case of the machine not beating me! I have tried researching this on the net, but nothing tells me whats wrong (and I did stray on some sites run by blokes with scary beards and abstract cardigans who just confused me more than I already was).

      Turning Norton off doesnt make any difference. Whats strange is I get the system admin email within 10 secs of doing it - so it seems that my email isnt actually going anywhere! Could outlook be attaching some kind of code to the smtp which it wont allow? From my brief study with said bearded men, its eems that this occurs to help reduce spam. But having said that I am only talking about 10 emails a day.... I tried running the "run rules now" functionality and that never works with the falied messages again..... Ho hum

      Hi, i'm also getting these same problems, since last week, when i presume sky altered there servers. Sky phoned me this morning to try and help with the problem, but because i'm using outlook to send my business emails using sky's smtp they said they couldn't help me, because, sky does not allow work based email only personal.

      But the guy did talk me through changing to the tools smtp, but that didn;t help either. So he basically said there's nothing he can suggest except i search the net for an answer! great help!

      Has anyone found a way round this yet? i send about 50 work emails a day and about 20% get this 550 relay error, they do send eventually after resending them a few times.
