sky email - why do u want it?
Hi,
Why is it people complain about their email with SKY... I've noticed that some people simply wish to cancel their 'fast and problem free internet' just because of their stupid email with SKY.
I don't use my sky email at all, I have always used a different email service nothing to do with my ISP.
But yet why is it people will want to cancel their internet, complain about not getting into their email and moan about this!! to me I find it silly, what do u guys think?

Re: sky email - why do u want it?
Well....
I don't use Sky email either. I just set my proper email account to go fetch it in case Sky send me something important. I would never rely on my ISP to provide my email.
But...
Sky broadband is aim at a mass-market, and for many people it will be their first taste of a broadband service, and many others will not be experts in the finer arts of setting up email services and the like.
When they suddenly find that they can't use their email, and they don't feel comfortable or able to change the settings and play around with an appalling web portal then you can see how they would get frustrated.
The way I see it is - if my Mum couldn't set this up without any help then Sky have failed. My Mum would have thrown in the towel by now and probably thrown her computer out the window too!
We all pay Sky to provide broadband and email, and although it is extremely cheap people have a right to expect it all to work and, when it doesn't, for the support desk to be able to explain why.
I think canceling a bargain broadband account for the sake of poor email is probably extreme, but I can totally sympathize with how people feel..

Re: sky email - why do u want it?
There is a danger in using an ISP's e-mail service, in case you decide to change provider.
The other needless complication people let themselves in for is using Outlook Express which is less than intuitive to set up manually and may cause problems with mail containing malware being downloaded to your computer before you can spot it and delete it.
Put simply, unless you receive and send tons of e-mail you don't need Outlook. And you especially don't need it if you plan to travel and use other computers to check your e-mail.
Which is why most computer-savvy types I know stick with relatively primitive Hotmail, Yahoo etc webmail accounts which offer decent address book facilities and are pretty much foolprooof.

Re: sky email - why do u want it?
I don't, I have given up on it and now use 2 of my own domains (1 for secure 1 for non-secure) for all my email needs.
I use windows live hotmail for webmail if I am not at home, but considering quite a few people are now saying that Hotmail is now bouncing when they try to send something to me as it looks like they are tightening up their ISP whitelist even my use of that is dropping.
One question I do have, is it possible to use POP3 with hotmail as I have looked all over for settings but I am unable to find any.

Re: sky email - why do u want it?
I think a lot of the complants on here just recently are because of the fact that Sky do not set out clearly out to get this new email service working, for example for people who use Windows mail nowhere does it mention that you can use Googlemail servers to get it working, it was only that I found a thread on here mentioning this that I managed to get it working as it would not work with the tools servers. If Sky why to mention little things like this on their site then it might help cut down the number of people having problems setting up their mail.

I used it (rarely) via the portal, but find it none user friendly, so will stick with my yahoo accounts. Don't think my life will change for the worse cos I'm not using it
