Re: Sky Preventing Accessing Alternative SMTP / POP servers?
A quick google search says port 993 is used for encrypted IMAP mail, not POP

Re: Sky Preventing Accessing Alternative SMTP / POP servers?
Yup, .mac is both a imap and pop service. When you set it up Mac Mail already knows all the settings - you just add your username and password to the mix.
there are also POP servers for use with other email programs such as Thunderbird and Entourage (mac version of Outlook) these servers use the standard non-SSL ports of 25 and 110
Either way, at present, it doesn't work! :-).

Re: Sky Preventing Accessing Alternative SMTP / POP servers?
I just telnetted to port 25 on smtp.mac.com using my sky connection without any problem. It was willing to let me send mail.
Neither of you are using peer guardian are you? Mine blocked it to start with.

Ahhhhhhhh, hopefully this is a Eureka moment (and one I should have thought about)! Peer Guardian is also installed on my Mac.
Without being in front of my computer and Peer Guardian do I have to create a new rule/exception to allow OSX Mail to succesfully connect to the .Mac servers. If so what have you told Peer Guardian to do.
Cheers in advance.

Cheer terrorvis
I'm fairly hopeful this is the issue as it explains why the connection was instantly refused. It really should have occured to me that Peer Guardian may be a factor as I regularly use the program - but sometimes you can't see the wood for the trees.
Strange why it should start manifesting itself in recent weeks as nothing has changed on my set-up and it's always been happy to allow my connection to the .Mac servers, maybe it was included on one of the updated lists?
Anyway, my partner always takes the michael that I use forums but hopefully I am now vindicated - I'll let you know if it works.

Re: Sky Preventing Accessing Alternative SMTP / POP servers?
I suspect it will be that. Mac mail isn't something I use, but peerguardian updates have caused me problems in the past. One day I tried remote desktopping into home, never had a problem before, suddenly it wouldn't work. Checked peerguardian and it was blocking my workplace under 'education'. Fair enough I suppose, I do work for a college!
