      Good lord, the spam!

Good grief! I just mucked about getting email working again (I shall be using my email software and deleting messages on the server - who really wants to leave their email hanging around on something powered by Google of all places? You know - the search engine that keeps tabs on all it's users).

But good grief, have they not heard of spam filters?

My first mail download was a boggling 99 messages; my first thought was that some old messages already downloaded had been transferred over to the new server and Thunderbird erroneously thought they were "new" (that happened when NTL changed thier mail servers years ago).

But..NO! My mailbox was full to the brim with junk - far, far more than usual. I assume that Sky were doing at least some filtering on their servers. It appears Google don't.

Thankfuly Thunderbird chucked this junk into the garbage folder.

And my email name is an unusual one. Pity the poor souls that use anything resembling a real name.

I find it very surprising how much spam gets through. I receive dozens, most of which are actually not to my exact email address! I use Mailwasher Pro ( a legacy from my time at Bulldog) and they all get zapped very quickly. How they manage to get into my mailbox, is beyond me.

Google's spam filters are some of the best in the business - so unless sky have specifically requested they turn them off (highly unlikely) then there is something hinky going on. Perhaps when sky transfer everyting over to the new server it marks all the messages as being safe.

I can assure you that google spam filters are excellent.

Well i hope you are right. I've just altered my settings to access my email using Pegasus (POP3) and I've downloaded 250, of which 246 are spam.

Did you look in your new inbox first? Were those messages all in there too? I'm convinced it's something od that has happened in the transfer. As I have said elsewhere before, I haven't had junk mail in months.

      good luck!

      Re: Good lord, the spam!

I only use webmail when I am away and therefore have to. On searching my folders on the new web site, i found 794 messages in trash! They were all spam bar one. Though why i was able to d/l some of them i do not know, my inbox only had 6 (all legit).

      Re: Good lord, the spam!

I wonder, is it possible that in the changeover, they simply sent all the mail from the old Sky mail server to the new Google one, and in both cases managed to evade the spam filters? In the first instance, they may have simply transferred all the waiting mail without filtering, and Google either assumed that it was prefiltered, even though it wasn't, or turned filtering off for fear of wiping some non-spam messages?

In any case, it seems to have died down; spamming is back to normal levels.

Hopefuly, this was just an artefact of the switch.

I have to say, it really didn't look very good, the first feature of the shiny new mail server being a ton of spam descending into one's mailbox!
