smtp.sky.com Password problems?
Hi,
I've had a search but couldn't see a resolution to my problem...
I've been using SkyBB for a few months and had all the usual issues, which I've generally resolved, but last night I was suddenly prompted to enter my password when trying to send email from Thunderbird 2.0.0.6. I initially wasn't sure what the password was, so I used everything from the one in my original set-up letter through to a newly set password via the Sky portal. No joy - I can still receive mail but cannot send it. Does anyone know why? It's getting so annoying that I'm getting very close to putting my head in a blender. I've reinstalled Thunderbird and also cleaned up old accounts etc.
I did call Sky but the 'techie' had never heard of Thunderbird!

Re: smtp.sky.com Password problems?
I can't answer your question but do you happen to have another email account set up in Thunderbird as you can send mail via that account.

Re: smtp.sky.com Password problems?
The smtp server for outgoing email is smtp.tools.sky.com and to use that, you need to supply a password. This is because, despite the name, it's actually a mail server run by Google on behalf of Sky.
The old smtp server - smtp.sky.com - doesn't need a password. It works by simply detecting that you're on Sky's broadband network and thus are authorised to use it for outgoing messages.
In Thunderbird, you need to UNtick the "Use name and password" tickbox in the SMTP server settings, if you're going to use smtp.sky.com.

Re: smtp.sky.com Password problems?
Thanks James, I've tried it both ways, neither works. If I use the old smtp server I get a message saying the server may be unavailable or or is refusing connections. If I use the new server I get into an endless loop of entering my password. I assume this is the password that goes along with my Sky.com username? I've changed that today and it doesn't make any difference.
All a bit frustrating, to say the least.

Re: smtp.sky.com Password problems?
I had same problem. It can't be a password problem as it allows you to receive emails. I fixed it on mine by unticking the 465 box but leaving the 995 box ticked (in outlook). Just by trial and error. Might work for you too.

Re: smtp.sky.com Password problems?
Sindy - many thanks! Trial and error did it. For anyone with a similar problem with Thunderbird 2.0.0.6 I had to do the following;
Outgoing server; smtp.sky.com
port 25,
Use name and Password: yes
Use Secure connection: no
POP Server;
pop.sky.com
user name; xxxx (make sure you don't include @sky.com)
port: 995
Hope this helps somebody, and thanks to all those that made suggestions.
I still don't understand why it started playing up mid-session though.Last edited by rafterman; 18-10-07 at 09:53 AM. Reason: grammar

Does anyone know how the hell you connect sky email with Entourage on mac.
I've tried sky's instructins but het password/username problems, numerous variations of many other people's instructions but all seem to fail.
HELP PLEASE! I'm about to feed my mac it's mouse.
Many thanks and sorry for the newbie rant.
