      Thank goodness for this site

Hi all I have just joined sky broadband unlimited, and after a few hours trying to set up Thunderbird I discovered that it is one of the headings in this thread. Very pleased to say it worked first time.
      Thanks Martin

This doesn't work for me. The 'captcha' page refuses to accept my username/password combination even after I changed my password. I tried username with '@sky.com' but '@' is flagged as an illegal character and if I omit it the '@' and everything after it, I am told my username/password combination don't match.

Since different things seem to work for different people with the same issues I suggest the problem is server-side and is a corruption/coding issue Sky and/or Google are unwilling to address.

I will be writing a full report of my experiences to post here after I have read the complete thread, just in case somebody has a solution that works for me. Still cannot connect my primary email account through Outlook.

One thing you may want to try if you keep getting errors about username or password is a password reset on Sky.com using the "Forgotten my password" link. There are currently something like 3 systems that have your details on within the Sky setup and it may be that a password is out of synch somewhere.
A reasonable assumption, Paul. Unfortunately, this didn't work for me either.

For those spending money trying to fix Sky's problem, I used this freephone number-

      0800 0512592

You have to be put through to a 'technician' who doesn't seem to know much and appears to be reading from a set of instructions. However, at least they pay!

as for leaving an ISP cause email dosn't work?? bit extreme don't you think - coupled with the fact you'd have to pay the remainder of the contract to get out of it it might be better to wait and see and setup a backup account for the meantime...
First, unless folk take action, Sky will be happy to leave you in limbo.

Second, one might reasonably argue that the issue is a failing on Sky’s part, and therefore it is they who have broken the contract and perhaps should be repaying your subscriptions*.

Third, It is now 2010 and the issue is still not resolved! What are they doing with our money? Certainly not paying real technicians!

*If one Sky customer successfully did this I bet they’d pretty quickly put things right before the very expensive landslide of claims.

Any legal eagle’s out there who can give an informed opinion?

Because ‘Sly’ are using Gmail we have to use Gmail’s incoming server. We can’t (or shouldn’t- I have read of folk having success using this port with sky) use Gmail’s outgoing server, port 587 because the outgoing server doesn’t (shouldn’t!) recognise the email address and should reject it. So we have to (should) use port 465.

Gmail uses ‘non-standard ports’ (they are actually standard, as somebody else on this thread reported) for secure connections.

It's not really a problem since I CAN'T GET THE DAMNED THING TO WORK PROPERLY ANY-BL**DY-HOW!

This is what confuses me. If there is a problem one would expect the primary account to work and have issues with the secondary account.

I maintain something is wrong server-side. They need to look at their set-up and have their coding checked. Those who have tried multiple solutions and hit on one that works have, I suspect, been lucky and their solution won’t work for others.

      Albro
2010 and I have the problem. Should have stuck with Virgin and gone cable.

Does anybody know if Sky officials or techs read this forum? Perhaps it should be suggested.

Apart from that remembering to enable POP in the first place via sky.com, email and tools, settings is the main thing that trips people up.

I can use Gmail in outlook and secondary sky mail. But I cannot use my primary sky email even though I have checked and re-checked the settings and gone through them with a sky ‘technician’ who left me waiting in vain for a call-back.
