Problem using Outlook Express
Hi All
I have just moved from Orange dial-up to Sky Broadband and wish to continue using Outlook Express for mail.
Installed version of Outlook Express is 6.00.2900.2180
I am using AVG anti virus and Zone alarms firewall
Despite all my efforts I can send e-mail FROM Outlook Express but get the following errors when attempting to read e-mails :
The server responded with an error. Account: 'Sky mail', Server: 'pop.sky.com', Protocol: POP3, Server Response: '-ERR AVG POP3 Proxy Server: Cannot connect to the mail server!', Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 0x800CCC90, Error Number: 0x800CCC90
Settings are correct as per tutorial:
Incoming mail - pop.sky.com
Account name - username without the @sky.com
Password - main Sky broadband password.
Incoming mail (pop3) 110
Secure connection (SSL) not ticked
Have tried various things such as setting incoming mail to 995 - ticking the Secure connection box etc but to no avail - outgoing mail is fine !
Anyone out there got any suggestions - have e-mailed Tech support but no response.
Best regards
Glassman

Re: Problem using Outlook Express
Hi Glassman,
I have the same problem. as you.
I have phoned Sky tech support who verified I have done everything correctly and they advised me to get in touch with Microsoft Support which I did. They could do nothing and suggested I ring PCWorld tech support at £40 for a solution.
I have only just got my broadband with Sky after having been with NTL. In the Sky information booklet it tells you how to get Sky into OE but sadly it's not working.
Let me know if you get a solution.
Zeldith.

Re: Problem using Outlook Express
It's worked!!!!!
I went on OE, tools, accounts, mail, properties, and in the servers tab I unticked "log on using secure password authentication".
Thought it might help you Glassman.

Re: Problem using Outlook Express
Hi All
Just to update you - things went from bad to worse - a couple of days after posting the problem I was having getting Outlook Express to work with Sky mail - I lost mail altogether I could not even log into the Sky Portal.
Phoned tech support - incidently the 0800 free number posted elsewhere is not not working just tells you to phone the usual tech support number. Tech support said they would look into it - they said there was a new system in place and the would write to me to advise when the problem was fixed - I queried how long the letter would take - up to 12 days was the answer I got !!!!
After 4 days the letter duly arrived saying the problem had been fixed - great ! go to log in - same problem !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Onto Tech support again - had to wait for another letter to be sent out - and yes you have guessed it - problem was still there when letter arrived.
At this point I set up a Yahoo account and had it working with Outlook Express in 10 minutes flat !
Back to Sky Tech support who now said I needed to speak to customer services as my account was locked !!!!!!!!!!
Went through the Sky phone system trying to get to customer support - YOU CANT !!!! So back to Tech support who transferrred me !!!
Customer support appeared more helpful and said they would e-mail my Yahoo address with 48 hours - of course they didn't !!!
Phoned customer support again and finally spoke to someone who appeared to know what they were doing - except that the database she needed to access was down !!! However she promised to ring me back.
True to her word she rang back a couple of hours later - gave me the new password and I was able to get into e-mail after over 2 weeks out of action !!!
There clearly are staff at Sky who know what they are doing but sadly they seem to be very much in the minority. It seems that Customer services are a better bet for sorting this type of problem than Tech support.
Needless to say that although my Sky mail is operational - I havn't bothered trying to hook it into Outlook Express and will continue to use Yahoo which to date has proved totally reliable and problem free.

Re: Problem using Outlook Express
Have also had this problem but have now managed to fix it. in the accounts section of Outlook select your account and then click on the servers tab. On the server information where it currently reads pop.tools.sky.com and smtp.tools.sky.com change these to pop.gmail.com and smtp.gmail.com and then click apply . This worked for me and hopefully it eill work for you too

Re: Problem using Outlook Express
These were the good old days before "pop.tools.sky.com and smtp.tools.sky.com" and Gmail were even in use.
