      DLM question new router

      Hi all,
      New to the forum.
I have been with sky broadband for about 8 years (i think). I had one of the sky routers that looked like a mini sky box, that seemed fine, then about 3 years ago it packed up, got a spare one from a friend and have been using that since running at about 8meg download which is fine for us. This started to get slow, so i rebooted the router and it would not connect. So i bought an SR102 brand new. This has been on the line since Tuesday and my speeds are terrible. It has been put in exactly the same place as the old one and it plugged into the master socket, using speediest and am lucky if is get 1.5 down and 0.5 up. I appreciate the DLM side of thing needs to happen but we have been stable at 8 down for years and now have this problem. Will it settle? It is starting to be very annoying. If i had changed provider i might understand a bit more.

Any help or advice someone can offer i would appreciate it.
Stats are below the noise has gone up from about 7/8db downstream.

It looks like your line is set to a test speed. Call Sky and ask them to reset your line. To avoid delays when you phone you would be better plugging the router into the Test socket if you have one, you will probably be asked to do so. How to test your ADSL in the Master Test Socket You should be getting 12-13Mb.

Stats from this morning. At office today so will see what it is like when I get home. Not sure why they don't just use the settings I have had for years. Will phone over the weekend as per your suggestion.

Possibly there has been a fault on your line which caused DLM to reduce the speed. Now its been fixed but DLM can take a long time to up the speed again. Hence the need to call.

      Re: DLM question new router

Well i called sky today. The line had been manually capped as they thought there might be a problem. Nice of them to let me know. However the guy was very helpful and got me back up to speed. They suggested that they test the line for 48hrs keeping the speed the same, in the end we decided against that a the line has been stable for 8 years. He has said that it might be intermittent and if it is i should call again. I hope not as we appear to be back to normal, see stats below.

Those stats would suggest a fairly good clean line.

      12.5Mbps from a 33.5dB line at 7dB noise margin is bang-on standard.

However, sky's DLM software will generally use a target noise margin of 6dB or occasionally 3dB, resulting in an extra meg or two download speed compared to your manually configured 7dB profile.
Lower margin = more speed but less stability so only some lines can handle 3dB.

DLM may step in again automatically in order to maximise the line's potential, although as Isitme intimated, for all DLM is (thankfully) quick to reduce speed when it detects a problem it is less eager to raise speeds after the problem has passed.

If the line continues to be stable after a week or so & DLM hasn't kicked in yet, then the option to call sky again & ask for DLM line training to be started is always there.

thanks all, it seems to be ok at the moment. It is actually quicker according to those stats from before fitted the new sky router. Back to decent speeds and can actually do things.

I see they are still making a hash of capping the upstream when manually profiling the line
