New to Sky Broadband / Speed I should expect

Just had Sky unlimited BB (on LLU) enabled. I was on Pipex (Tiscali), was synched at 8128 with 36db down attenuation, noise margin of 6dB.

Now on Sky (today). I understand they check for stability but expected better rate than Ive got.
Its a Sagem router, using exact same cabling as old Linksys router, right upto router.
      System Up Time: 3:16:18
Port Status TxPkts RxPkts Collisions Tx B/s Rx B/s Up Time
      WAN PPPoA 51034 59069 0 52 0 1:36:24
      LAN 17666 10731 0 0 0 3:16:18
      WLAN 504892 321376 0 0 66 3:15:50
      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 4095 kbps 605 kbps
Line Attenuation 38.5 db 19.5 db
Noise Margin 10.6 db 16.3 db

I see noise margin is quite high expected it to be lower therefore better rate. had no stability issues with old connection, and 5db was lowest the noise margin went and was solid. Is this just DLM and if so what do you think I can expect. Also upstream seems slow is this affected by DLM also??

      thanks in advance

Take the front faceplate off the master socket and make sure that there are not wires connected to terminal 3 as this is know to cause noise problems, just make sure only terminal 2 and 5 are connected, as you seem to have noise on the line as your SNR is low for your connected speed and attenuation.

I tested this in the test socket on the main incoming line and then moved router back to study.
      Here are the results

      In study

Port Status TxPkts RxPkts Collisions Tx B/s Rx B/s Up Time
      WAN PPPoA 62 63 0 0 0 0:00:49
      LAN 64 0 0 0 0 0:01:52
      WLAN 2643 2947 0 0 0 0:01:24
      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 4095 kbps 605 kbps
Line Attenuation 38.0 db 19.5 db
Noise Margin 12.3 db 17.3 db

When in master socket the Upstream Noise Margin was 17.7 db. otherwise the same. I called Sky to ask about the synch speed, they said it would be that until 10 days then it will go to what they think I should be getting. Is that really how their DLM works. I thought that they specify a target noise margin, and my router would synch at the fastest it can for that noise margin, but my rate didn't change at all when I tested it this morning.

      Is this right?

Re: New to Sky Broadband / Speed I should expect

DLM starts (on Unlimited) at 4Mbps with SNR of 7dB. The SNR level never changes in terms of how it's set - DLM increases the speed if it sees the line as stable and free of errors. If it detects something it'll stop until the issue is resolved and then can be started again.

Now, most people don't seem to be able to accept this and call in to get DLM suspended - which'll likely lead to further issues in future and more work for the agents who shuld be dealing with real issue such as dead connections or line fault...

Make sure the ring wire connected to terminal 3 on the back of the master faceplate is disconnected.

Re: New to Sky Broadband / Speed I should expect

It was connected to test socket so no ring wire, no ring wire connected on faceplate either, and in study, it made no difference to noise margin with or without the ring wire connected.
