Catch Up TV not possible with White Sky+ box - upgrade options/costs

Prompted by the SKY billboard campaign, I have been finding out if I can use the new Catch Up facility - to watch BBC iPlayer etc. But found out that my white Sky+ box is incompatible. So what to do?

Sky customer service (!) tell me that I can have a new black Sky + box for 199 or I can upgrade to Sky+HD, get a free HD box but I have to add HD subscription to my package. I don't want the HD service. I have threatened to cancel, but no change - its pay 199 or py for a Sky+HD subscription.

Alternatives? Get a black Sky+ box or a Sky+HD box on eBay? I have read on other forums on this site that if you get a Sky box second-hand, you have to get your viewing card paired with the 'new' box. That sounds OK. However, is it possible to get my viewing card paired with a 'new' HD box if I don't have the HD subscription?

Can anyone suggest any other alternatives? One that I've tried is connecting my laptop via an HDMI lead to the TV and viewing BBC iPlayer on the big TV - works OK, but I would prefer the convenience of not having to link up the laptop (someone else will want to use it!).

      Thanks for anything helpful.

Yes it should be fine without the subscription.

      Hi SheffieldTG,

Another alternative would be to pay for the HD sub & get the 'free' HD box.
Ok, you would have to commit to a 12 month contract on the HD sub (129).
But cancel the HD sub after 12 month & you get a new box with warranty which is 70 cheaper than buying without HD sub.
I know this would be more expensive than buying from Ebay but as I said you get a new box with 12 months warranty, where as a box from Ebay might last 6 months before you get a problem.

If you simply want iPlayer then you don't need to go the Sky route at all. You will find plenty of other devices support iPlayer - I recently bought a new Toshiba Blu Ray player that not only plays Blu Ray and DVD but also offers iPlayer (and others) via it's LAN connection just like a Sky HD+ box or a Smart TV. I now seem to have a number of devices that will deliver iPlayer (Sony TV, TVonics DTT recorder, Toshiba Blu Ray player and imminently my Sky+ HD box). By careful shopping online I paid 35 for the Toshiba box delivered.

If you decide to go the eBay second user route take care you buy a Sky+HD box that will work with iPlayer - some don't, such as the Thomson HD boxes.

The apps for other devices do work but they are incredibly slow and clunky compared with what will soon be on offer from Sky's Catch Up section. Hopefully I will never have to go near my Bravia Internet TV again once iPlayer becomes live and instantly accessible on Sky. Something else to bear in mind is that the apps are streaming-only these streams vary a lot in quality. The 5OD app on my TV is truly awful and has no HD alternative but looks great in Sky's Catch Up. Even ITV's SD-only offerings are watchable compared to the streaming apps.

Re: Catch Up TV not possible with White Sky+ box - upgrade options/costs

My Bravia produces very high quality iPlayer output. It's not quite as good as the best HD but is very acceptable. The actual App is a little slow when choosing Content but that only takes a few seconds compared to the 60+ minutes of watching the very acceptable video.

In any case iPlayer via any of my devices (when on the 'high quality' setting) is much better than Sky SD from a Sky+ box - if you are watching on a 42" TV.

It will however be very convenient to watch all my content through a single integrated portal supplied by Sky. I look forward to that!

Re: Catch Up TV not possible with White Sky+ box - upgrade options/costs

Was told by "Sky live chat" adviser that if its your 1st HB box you can get the 2tb box for 49.00 WITHOUT taking the HD service !!

Printed it out sent it to sky ... they just give you the run around has ANYONE took this offer??

Getting Sky Fiber installed in 2 weeks so was looking for a nice new box to go with it, with lots of storage only have Entertainment Extra pack so HD upgrade is a waste of time for us

we have the Old White non HD box
