Sky's 31 day cancellation policy on phone is unfair

I cancelled my Sky phone(and broadband and TV) on 23/7. I moved out of my old house on 27/7. They say that the cancellation period is 31 days. I only had 4 days notice to move, so couldn't give Sky any more .
The person that moved in has used my line, unbeknown to me and raised a bill of 108!!!! Sky say this is my tough luck and want me to pay. I basically told them where to go as there is no way that I had any control over the line, as I wasn't living there.
So, I need some advice here. Anyone got any ideas? The people that moved into my old place are on benefits, so they won't pay. I guess I need to prove the date I legally moved out?

      Hmm, tough one.

      Playing devils advocate:

      - you knew that you have to give a months notice, but chose not to (surely you had a rough idea as to when you were moving). It is not sky's fault of your moving circumstances so why should sky lose out.

      - however, sky could have disabled your line whilst still claiming the full months payment from you, so why should you lose out.

Really is a tough one. The new owners have fraudulently used your line, so if you don't get any joy with Sky showing some good will, then you may have to take the new owners to court to seek repayment.

      Keep us updated on this.

Re: Sky's 31 day cancellation policy on phone is unfair

I initially tried to transfer all my Sky products to my new address, but they couldn't seem to do this. I spent hours hanging on the phone to Sky's moving department. After many cut offs, I finally decided to cancel my services completely, even though I didn't really want to.
I really did only have 4 days notice to move out. I managed to get all the other service providers sorted out.

I shall be speaking to ofcom and the Which? legal team about this issue. Hope they can help me find a solution.

If they accepted your cancellation of the TV service, I think you should have quoted this Term to them
7.3 We may also restrict or end the provision of Sky Talk on giving at least 7 days' notice to you if:
      (a) your Sky TV subscription is suspended or ends for any reason other than where we are at fault, (unless it is ended at your request in which case your Sky Talk Service will end automatically at the same time without notice)

I had the line rental from Sky. That is where my problems started, when trying to move my services to a different address.

I am a member of Which? legal service, so I'll ring them tomorrow.

      Thanks for the advice.

Be careful with the above, did Sky charge your TV until the end of 31 days or until the 4 days.

If it was the 31 days then the above won't help. If they did it until the 4 days then you have your answer.

      Check your billing period first.

Re: Sky's 31 day cancellation policy on phone is unfair

Just got off the phone with Sky.

Basically, they admit that they should have cut the line off immediately, because I had moved out.

They have apologised, written off the bill, and I owe nothing.

      Result!
